Even though Amtrak has returned to the station and is using "Train Hall", much of "Train Hall" is still fenced off. Passengers can essentially get from the station to the platform along Track 4. The other platforms and the stairs to the pedestrian bridge are all fenced off, and will probably remain that way until May 2014.

An on-time Zephyr (with a burned out tail light) waits on Track 4 for its scheduled departure time. Train Hall will feature eight tracks. Tracks 1-3 will be used for the East Line to DIA and the North Line to Thornton. Tracks 4 and 5 will be reserved for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak and UP's Cheyenne Frontier Days train. Tracks 6-8 will be used for the Gold Line to Arvada and (if it is ever built), the Northwest Line to Boulder/Longmont.

A look at the backside of Union Station. You can see a new white covering extending from Train Hall to the back wall of the station.

Prior to the renovations, Amtrak passengers would descend unground to a tunnel in order to access the platform for Track 1. Now, passengers walk out the back doors directly to the platforms, same as they did through the 1990s. However, when first existing the station, passengers will find stairs/elevators descending to the "Bus Concourse". The unground bus terminal is going to replace RTD Market Street Station located a few blocks away. Passengers will be able to get to the platforms for tracks 2-8 underground, as well as the Light Rail station located a few blocks to the northwest.

If you remember the old layout of (the interior of) Union Station prior to construction, then this angle might look familiar. This shot features Amtrak's new ticket office in the station. Once upon a time, this was the location of a gift shop in the station. The hall to the left has an elevator that went down to the O-Scale and HO-Scale layouts that were located in the basement.

In August 2011, Amtrak left Union Station for a temp station a few blocks away. Over the next 2 1/2 years, the old tracks and platform behind the station were dismantled a new "Train Hall" was constructed. On February 28, 2014, Amtrak moved back to Union Station! Much of the station is still under construction and is not scheduled to open until May 2014. But passengers have an entrance and a way to get to the California Zephyr, which now uses Track 4 out back.

The front of Union Station in Denver offers up a timeless view. The building will be preserved as a Historic Monument. The orange neon sign was added to the station in 1952 in an attempt to promote train travel as airlines were increasingly taking over the rails. Trains at the station came close to extinction in 2009, particularly after the Ski Train stopped running. Now, the station is preparing to once again become a major rail hub with commuter rail (plus Amtrak) arriving out back.

The parking around the outside of Union Station has been removed and some contemporary buildings are being built in their place. You can see one of the new buildings in the distance, located between Union Station and the Ice House. Union Station is slated to reopen to the public in summer of 2014.

Scaffolding covers the exterior of Union Station as works continues to restore the historical monument. This is the scene from 17th and Wynkoop. Better this than a demolition team!

A lot of work has been done on the enclosure and tracks behind Union Station. The sign in the foreground clearly indicates there will be eight tracks total. At least one of those tracks will be reserved for "heavy rail" trains such as Amtrak. Hopefully there will be a second track dedicated to heavy rail so trains like Cheyenne Frontier Days will have a home, when needed.

Traditional shots in the back of Union Station are a thing of the past. While I am thrilled that Union Station itself isn't going anywhere, modern architecture is quickly closing in around it from all sides.

A look toward the stub-ends of the eight new tracks behind Union Station. These tracks, located beneath this interesting enclosure, will include tracks for EMU commuters to run to Denver International Airport, Arvada and eventually (if funding is found) Thornton and Boulder/Longmont.

A lot of construction is going on behind Union Station these days. New buildings (both residential lofts and hotels) are under construction and the new dome-type enclosure for the eight tracks behind Union Station is clearly visible.

After returning to Denver due to a major rock slide on the Moffat, the westbound Zephyr is going to be turned into the eastbound Zephyr. The spare P42 is taken out of the stub track and added to the front of the train. On the west side of the divide, the eastbound Zephyr was wyed at Tabernash and turned into the westbound Zephyr. Passengers from that train were bussed to Denver and placed on this train to continue east to Chicago. Likewise, passengers from this train were bussed to Fraser and placed on the new westbound Zephyr. When all was said and done, #5 was 10 hours late heading west and #6 was just under 3 hours late heading east.

After leaving Denver and then getting pulled back to Denver, the California Zephyr sits in track 1, the only remaining track at Union Station. The train was pulled back to town by the P42 on the rear end after a derailment on the Moffat.
