Three units lead up the westbound Denver-Provo as the train passes by the hoppers that have served as a wind break on the inside of the curve for the past 50 years. All of the cars have been covered in graffiti from top to bottom.

After climbing up and around Big Ten Loop, the Zephyr is now moving northwest (geographically) after having been moving southeast just minute earlier. The train is looking at an Approach (yellow) signal at east Eisele (Clay).

Just west of Rocky, the westbound Zephyr is climbing up toward Big Ten Loop. Within just a few minutes, the train will be headed the opposite direction on the track higher up in the shot. The Zephyr is also rolling very slow at 10 MPH as there is a slow order around Big Ten Loop due to high winds on this morning.

An eastbound BNSF (empty) grain train slowly descends down from Big Ten Loop toward a red signal at the west switch of Rocky. UP's dispatcher is waiting to hear from the BNSF yard master as to whether or not they can take the train. If the wait will be too long, the train can be lined in to the siding at Rocky. As it turns out, the wait was not long, and the empty received a clear signal after just a few minutes.

It would appear the conductor on the westbound "Rockies to the Red Rocks" in taking in the views with a few shots from along the long hood as the train climbs up Big Ten Curve.

An AC4400CW, an ET44AC, and an ES44AC lead a westbound coal empty as it snakes its way around Big Ten and toward a clear signal at the east end of Eisele (Clay). After getting flagged by a red signal at west Rocky, the coal empty has creeped up Big Ten!

You have to appreciate the design and engineering that went in to the create of Little Ten and Big Ten curves. In a time before computers or drones, engineers found a way for the tracks to rapidly gain elevation over a very short distance (as the crow flies). An eastbound and a westbound manifest demonstrate the architecture in this shot.

A pair of ES44C4s and an SD70ACe lead the Provo-Denver east out of Eisele (Clay) and around Big Ten Loop. Waiting down at Little Ten Loop in the siding at Rocky is the counterpart to the Provo-Denver, the Denver-Provo!

The westbound Zephyr wraps around the east leg of Big Ten Loop alongside a sting of hoppers on the inside of the track. These hoppers were placed here around 50 years ago. They were filled with cement and dirt and the track they are on was severed from the main track. A few of the cars are even welded to the rails. These hoppers serve as a wind break. Winds can come rolling off the Rockies and straight across here at speeds of 70+ MPH (110+ KPH) at times. Prior to the wind break being put in place, one or two lighter trains derailed after being blown off the track!

At the start of the S-Curve on the north side of Big Ten Loop, the westbound Zephyr climbs toward the wind break hoppers located on the inside of the curve atop Big Ten. These hoppers have now been here for 50 years, helping provide protection from trains from the 70+ MPH winds that can come swooping down off the mountains.

It is the perfect evening to capture the return of the Zephyr to daily service in Denver. Running close to on time, the first eastbound Zephyr on a Tuesday in to Denver since last September descends down the northern leg of Big Ten Loop, turning toward the west switch of Rocky. A wet spring has created some fantastic green scenes around Denver. A great break from the typical dullish brown that tends to cover the landscape for 9-10 months out of the year.

The evening Zephyr slowly descends down the north leg of Big Ten Loop. The train is under a 10 MPH slow order that started at Plain and will continue down to Rocky. Great for me as that allowed me to get ahead of the train a couple of times for additional shots.

A pair of ES44ACs lead a westbound BNSF coal empty out of Rocky and up Big Ten Loop. The train is heading toward the Axial mine at the west end of the Craig Branch. While there have been BNSF trains on the Moffat in the past, they will go to Utah to load on the Utah Railway. Believe this is the first BNSF coal train to load on the Craig Branch.
