The morning Zephyr climbs the 2% grade up from the base of Coal Creek Canyon toward Tunnel 1. About an inch of snow fell the night before, giving a nice blanket for the morning.

The curves through that run past Blue Mountain Road and around the base of Coal Creek Canyon allow for some very interesting shots of trains as they work their way through them. Such is the case here as a westbound coal empty climbs its ways toward Tunnel One on New Year's Day 2018.

A single ES44C4 brings up the tail end of a very long Provo-Denver manifest. If you look above the white covered hopper, you can find the east portal of Tunnel One...which may have houses built atop it in the not-too-distant future as a housing development has been approved by the city.

You may note that the cab on this Norfolk Southern looks a little different. This unit is designated as an SD60E. Norfolk Southern has rebuilt 100 or so SD60s at their locomotive shops in Altoona, PA. Electronics were upgraded and the standard spartan cabs were replaced with Norfolk Southern's own version of a wide cab.

I caught this train above the tracks at East Cliff and then hustled down to the base of Coal Creek to get ready for a shot. Fortunately, the train was restricted to 20 MPH between Crescent and Rocky due to high winds. That gave me some extra time to climb around in the Jefferson County Open Space to try to find the best perspective possible.

An amazing consist rounds the curve at MP 23, right at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. Fortunately, mother nature cooperated and the skies are nice and sunny as the train continues east.

The first five units in this rainbow consist are units that I actually shot earlier this week on Wednesday and Thursday. Units four and five were on the Denver-Provo on Wednesday (along with another NS unit that is not on this train). Units one, two, and three led the Denver-Provo on Thursday.

A large-diameter pipe that runs underneath the fill at the base of Coal Creek Canyon allows for Coal Creek to pass underneath the tracks and out toward the plains. At this time of year, the creek is basically down to a trickle as an eastbound coal train passes above, heading east.

This is an angle I had never shot before prior to today. This eastbound coal train is descending from Tunnel One, crossing over CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon, and headed for the detector at MP 22.6 and Blue Mountain Road crossing. I wanted to get this because this scene will likely be changing in the near future. The land behind the train in the distance has been annexed by the City of Arvada and approved for development! 90 single family homes are set to be built on the hillside in the distance!

An eastbound coal load approaches a clear signal at MP 23 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. UP 2685 is an ET44AH and this angle offers a good look down the unit. You can clearly see the increased slope of the radiator housing at the back of the unit. This has to do with the Tier-4 emissions compliance.

An NS ES44AC leads four UP units on the climb from the base of Coal Creek Canyon up toward Tunnel One. When Union Pacific activates PTC (Positive Train Control) on the Moffat, there is a good chance it will mean the end of foreign power on the point of trains...at least for awhile. Until foreign power is equipped with PTC technology that is compatible with UP's, such units will not be able to lead on the Moffat.

It is not uncommon to see privately owned passenger cars catching a lift on the back of the Zephyr. Anyone that owns a private car can, for a fee, get pulled around virtually anywhere on Amtrak's system. This Pullman-built coach is named the "Pacific Sunset".

Prior to ordering their 200+ P42DCs to replace their F40PH fleet at the end of the 1990s and early 2000s, Amtrak first ordered 44 P40DCs from GE in 1993. These ended up spending several years in storage before being upgraded to P42DCs. They do retain their original P40DC numbers, however, which is why this unit wears 817 instead of a number between 1 and 207 as its "true" P42DC cousins do.

Typically, the westbound Zephyr would be shot from the opposite side of the bridge at the base of Coal Creek Canyon in order to have favorable light. However, running nearly four hours late has resulted in the sun swinging far enough around to the west that this side of the bridge is better for lighting.
