A few months before that and you would have found lots of power stored on (or waiting for maintenance on) those tracks. Now, the tracks have been removed with the closing of Burnham Yard. When the City of Denver wanted to build the 8th Avenue overpass, the main shops were smack in the middle of where 8th Avenue would run. So, the city built the overpass with a bend in it and it went around the south end of the building. Here is said building (Building #14) with the overpass in front of it. The tie plates used to lie underneath the rails of the "coach yard" on the west side of Burnham. Now, only a single track remain intact...and that track has DRGW 3006 - in additional to other equipment - currently resting on it. In order to access any of the doors in those buildings, cars or engines would be placed on a transfer table. The transfer table has since been sold at auction with the closing of Burnham. In the Rio Grande days, Burnham was the main maintenance facility for the railroad for both engines and rolling stock. Now, 28 years after the end of Rio Grande, its maintenance facility is in the process of being torn down. Major maintenance for UP will now be done in Little Rock, AR, or North Platte, NE. If you are unfamiliar with a transfer table, it is similar to a turn table. But instead of rotating, it moving vertically back and forth to allow cars and engines to be put in different stalls in the buildings. EMD (Electro-Motive Division, at that time) had a very unique look to it. It was, in my opinion, a very classy look. Nice to know that a couple Rio Grande GP30s will be preserved. DRGW 3011 is at the Colorado Railroad Museum, awaiting funds for restoration. DRGW 3006 is owned by a private individual who, as far as I know, also intends to restore the classic unit, which will soon celebrate 55th birthday. This unit is now owned by Daniel Quait, who intends to preserve the engine. It has been stored in Burnham for nearly 20 years, when it was retired from active service.
