This was due to the buckets of rain that were coming down. UP did not want somebody to slip and get injured on the platform, so passengers would not be loaded until the rain let up. Fortunately, while it had not fully stopped, it had let up enough to allow passengers to board. UP 844 is steaming up and getting ready to depart in about 15 minutes. My elementary understanding stops at "fire is created to boil water to create steam to drive pistons". Periodically, a certain amount of water must be dumped via a valve underneath the cab. Its serial number is 20146115-030 and it was built in April 2016. It was originally in UP's standard SD70AH roster series, but was renumbered 1943 when it was painted in the armed forces colors. The Spirit of Union Pacific was unveiled last November in tribute to the brave men and women of the armed services of the United States. Cheyenne has four main tracks (P1 - P4) located outside the depot. Cheyenne is a crew change point and these four tracks are used for crew changes on all trains coming through. Most trains only stop for 10-15 minutes for the crew change, and then continue on their journey. The dispatcher had to work with only three tracks this Saturday, with Cheyenne Frontier Days sitting on P1. An eastbound double stack coming in to town on P2. But I definitely think steam engines are amazing pieces of machinery. Love all the components visible from the outside, as well as all the steam and water to be found dripping and spraying on the outside.
