A look at the back side of DRGW AX-41, a very old Jordan Spreader that was used for decades clearing snow on Tennessee Pass. It isn't used much these days, but UP is taking it west to do some clearing of snow after a lot of the white stuff has hit the high country.

UP 2686 and UP 8084 did not get very far west of North Yard with DRGW AX-41 (a Jordan Spread) in tow. The spreader tripped the high/wide detector at MP 8.5. As a result, the crew stopped the train here on the main, just east of 66th Avenue. They are waiting for a carman to come out of North Yard and secure the wings on the spreader and ensure it can clear all the tunnels on the trip west.

A look above the cab of a UP ES44AC toward the cab of Jordan Spreader DRGW AX-41. The spreader is headed west to be put to work clearing some snow on the Moffat.

Perhaps you've seen a Jordan Spreader, used in the removal of snow, in the past. But perhaps you've never seen one from this perspective before! This is look straight down on DRGW AX-41, a Jordan Spreader that is no stranger to Colorado winters.

Sure do wish this classic Rio Grande Jordan Spreader was being pushed in this scene, rather than pulled. However, folks west of the divide may get to see it in action in the next day or two. UP is taking it west to do some plowing from some serious snow fall.

This Jordan Spreader has a long history with Colorado and Grande tracks. It is DRGW AX-41, and Rio Grande kept it stationed at Minturn back in the day. It would help keep snow clear of the tracks over Tennessee Pass. After Tennessee Pass closed, it spent a lot of time in the North Yard storage yard. It was used in 2003 when the Moffat got 80+ inches of snow. It was used again in Kansas on the KP at the end of 2006 and start of 2007. It then went back to the storage yard and sat. Finally, 13 years later, it looks like it might get some use again! UP is taking it west to Fraser as there has been a lot of snow up there this winter.

The mountains, which have received a generous amount of snow this winter, are calling for this classic Rio Grande Jordan Spreader to come and help clear snow. Alas, the spreader tripped the high/wide detector 3/4 miles to the east, and now it waits for a carman to secure it.

An ET44AC and an ES44AC bring AX-41, an old DRGW Jordan Spreader, west out of North Yard. It is supposed to be used on the west slope to actually clear some snow! By some accounts, it is the first time the spreader has left North Yard since 2007. However, one of the wings on the spreader hit the high/wide detector at MP 8.5. So, here the train sits waiting for a carman from North Yard to come out and secure it so it does not hit a tunnel wall.
