A rough start to Spring 2015 for BNSF on the Brush Sub. A broken wheel on this coal train caused 25-30 cars to derail on the west switch at Hudson. Most of the derailed cars fell over (and some appeared to be banged up well beyond repair), but a few of the derailed cars stayed upright. You can see the crews to the left, assembling and preparing to go to work to get the track reopened.

Got coal? There was quite a bit of it laying on the ground at the west switch of Hudson after this westbound BNSF coal load derailed. There were no injuries and no engines were involved. The derailment did, however, take out the west switch at Hudson as well as the eastbound signal. Crews definitely have their work cut out for them!

The train loaded at the Black Thunder Mine (in the Powder River Basin) and was headed for Amarillo, TX.

A derailment at the west switch of Hudson has two sets of toppled over cars. 20 or so cars piled up badly (in a short distance, to the right) while another four fell over (but didn't pile as much, to the left).

This was the worst part of a 25-30 car derailment at the west switch of Hudson. Roughly 20 hoppers piled up together and tumbling down off the south side of the track.

An overview of the worst part of a derailment on the BNSF Brush Sub. It appears that a broken wheel on one of the loaded hoppers caused 20-30 cars to derail at the west switch of Hudson. Fortunately, there were no injuries. At this point, crews were still trying to decide how to attack the derailed cars, and from where.

Crews from BNSF (as well as a 3rd party contractor) huddle together at the west switch of Hudson. The crews are meeting to determine how they are going to get the line back open. The coal train in the background derailed (and piled up) 25-30 loaded hoppers when a broken wheel caused a derailment at the west switch of Hudson.

Ouch! Roughly 20 loaded hoppers are all piled up here at the west switch of Hudson. Early reports indicated that a broken wheel caused the derailment. Here, coal, ties, twisted rail, and twisted cars are all mixed together.

This westbound BNSF coal load encountered a bit of an issue at the west switch of Hudson. What issue? Look closely...you'll notice some cars in places where they are not supposed to be. The train derailed 25-30 cars mid-morning. I took a picture from this same bridge just eight days earlier. That train had much better luck!

A coal load, led by a great looking SD70MAC (with the original "Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway" herald still on the nose) progresses west out of Hudson. If you look carefully in the distance, you can see a train in the siding at Hudson. That is the Hudson Turn, a local which regularly switches out a large industry just northeast of town. This coal load, which is following I-76, will take the siding at Tonville to meet an eastbound manifest.

The westbound California Zephyr stops at a red signal at the east end of Hudson. Normally, the train would pass this location sometime around 6:30am! Today, though, it is almost 12:30pm, due to a derailment at this same switch (note the maintenance crews). The Brush Sub Dispatcher would talk Amtrak past the signal and it would continue unhindered the rest of the way into Denver.

The westbound California Zephyr encountered a major delay in eastern Colorado due to a BNSF derailment at Hudson, CO. Shortly after noon, number 5 finally got the okay to pass through the site at walking speed. Here, the train is approaching the east switch of Hudson at 10 MPH.

The SD70MAC not-so-affectionately known as the "vomit-bonnet" is the first of two DPU units on the back of this coal empty.

The morning started out rather cloudy, but has cleared up nicely in the afternoon. BNSF 5909 east parallels I-76 as it approaches the small town of Hudson.

On the move, this coal train moves along at 50 MPH over the gentle hills of the eastern Colorado plains.
