Just another shot of the California Zephyr? Nope! This is, in fact, a new version of the Ski Train. It would only run twice in 2015 (March 14 and March 15), as part of a celebration for Winter Park's 75th Anniversary. However, Amtrak (which ran the train), Winter Park, and CDOT (Colorado Department of Transportation) all paid close attention. There is talk about Amtrak bringing the train back for the 2015-2016 Ski Season. Here, the train is approaching the east switch of Leyden

One of two special runs of Amtrak's version of the Ski Train crosses CO-72 at the base of Coal Creek Canyon. Originally, the train was only going to run on Saturday. However, after selling out tickets in ten hours, Amtrak added a second train on Sunday. That train sold on in just four hours!

Amtrak's special run of the Ski Train made excellent time up the hill. The train consisted of seven coaches (alternating between standard Coach cars and Coach Baggage cars), enough space for about 400 passengers and lots of skis! Here, the train passes the MNYRO, holding in the siding at Tolland.

The westbound Ski Train passes by the MNYRO at Tolland. In a very classy move, Amtrak sent AMTK 42 to run as the power on the train. This unit salutes veterans of the United States military. It was a beautiful morning for a special running of the Ski Train.

AMTK 42 came to Denver with quite a bit of grunge on it. However, the amazing Amtrak folks in Denver spent half a day giving the unit a very good washing. Their pride in their company, the special Ski Train, and this great unit is reflected in this shot of the train overtaking the MNYRO at Tolland.

DS-82 aligned the westbound MNYRO in to the siding at Tolland in order to allow Ski Train to pass by on the main. When entering the siding, the train went in to emergency. It looked like the Ski Train may get held up for a bit. However, the air started coming back on the MNYRO right away and the train was able to pull in to the clear. However, once the Ski Train passed, the conductor had the walk the train to ensure everything was okay.

It doesn't get much better than this! Crystal clear skies in the snow covered valley at Tolland. Other than being a bit dirty, the power on the MNYRO looks pretty good against a snow-capped Continental Divide backdrop.

A westbound (empty) oil train slowly pulls toward a yellow signal at East Tolland. Note the MNYRO in the siding at Tolland ahead. Both trains are waiting to head west. Which one will depart first is not yet clear. The Ski Train is unloading passengers at Winter Park and the tunnel is venting.

A westbound oil train pulls up on the main next to the MNYRO at Tolland. At the time of this photo, there were (on average) two oil trains traversing the Moffat each week. One empty, and one loaded. This empty will load upon arrival at Wash, UT (which is just east of Price, UT and Wellington, UT).

The MNYRO (to the left) went in to emergency when entering the siding at Tolland. To ensure nothing is wrong, the conductor had to walk the train. Upon completing the inspection (and finding everything in order), the oil train (to the right) picked up the conductor at the back of the train and gave him a ride up to the head end.

Two westbounds sit side-by-side at Tolland, both waiting to see who gets to continue west first. At a glance, how can you easily tell which train is on the main and which is on the siding? If you look at the track to the left, note that there are regular joints in the rail periodically. Not the case for the track to the right. That indicates the track to the left, having "jointed" rail, is the siding. The mainline has welded rail.

An absolutely gorgeous "Pi Day" at Tolland as the power on the MNYRO sits in great sunlight against a wintery Continental Divide backdrop. Why "Pi Day"? Well, for the math geeks out there, the value of Pi is roughly 3.1415925. The date for this picture just happens to be 3/14/15. This picture was taken at 9:30, five minutes after 9:25.

In my personal opinion, it doesn't get too much better than this! Crystal clear Colorado skies at 9,000 feet above sea level. Snow blanketing the ground and a pair of flagged DPUs pushing on the tail end of the MNYRO (Manifest, North Yard to Roper) as it heads out of the siding.

For a couple of months during the "slow" season, the Zephyr was running with a mere six Superliners. Now that Spring is getting close, Amtrak has expanded the Zephyr back up to seven Superliners. Here, the westbound Zephyr has a clear signal as it heads out the west end of Rollins.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east switch of East Portal. The train is running roughly 45 minutes late at this point.
