The last shot of the day on this President's Day. A former Espee GP40-2 (now UP 1456) and a former Espee GP40P-2 (now UP 1373) work the South Local on the branch at Military Junction leading to the industries at Cedar Creek. The GP40P-2 is now just a GP40-2 and has been for nearly thirty years! The steam generator was removed in 1985. But the extended long hood still remains. Unfortunately, some graffiti has appeared on the long hood.

Shots like this just take me back to my childhood! I have always (and will always) LOVE the EMD Spartan Cab. Here, the South Local makes a safety stop on the Military Junction branch leading to Western Metals by Cedar Creek. You can see the intersection at South Natches Ct in the background. Note the "double green" traffic signal, indicating the local is clear to back across South Natches Ct. This prevents the traffic signal from giving a green signal across the tracks and enables a "no right turn" electronic sign for traffic approaching Oxford on Natches Ct.

A pair of GP40-2s slowly backs down toward Cedar Creek on the branch at Military Junction. The grade here is actually quite steep (in railroad terms). The local backs down the branch about a half mile to Western Metals Recycling. Western Metals fills gondolas with scrap metal...hence all the (empty) gondolas seen in this shot. All-Coast Forest Products will also take delivery of a center beam or boxcar (or two) of lumber. Those were at the end of the local and out of the frame here.

Hooray! A GE unit running the way I remember from my childhood! The second unit in this consist was having some issues and putting out quite a bit of exhaust as this southbound manifest works out of the Littleton Trench.

This is a shot that deserves the title "The Right Place at the Right Time"! A southbound Light Rail train approaches the camera as a northbound train sneaks past heads toward Union Station. The Light Rail trains were just a bonus as I was waiting on the BNSF manifest in the distance!

Just south of Blakeland, this coal load went into emergency with power issues and had to come to a stop. The dispatcher let the train know they could go retrieve a spare unit from Castle Rock or have a manifest behind them cut off their power. I had to leave before hearing what the final resolution was.

Hopefully you aren't sick of all these Warbonnet shots just yet! Here is one final one taken two minutes before sunset. The train is on Main 1 and crossing over US-85 just north of Blakeland.

We are a bit south of the triple track and BNSF's Denver, CO to Pueblo, CO manifest is rolling along on Main 1. There was about 10 minutes of sun when I nabbed this shot.

Despite being a bit on the tattered side, these Warbonnets still look fantastic in the afternoon light. An interesting thing happened just after this shot. The conductor on the train came down and opened the nose door, clearly with the intention of trying to screw up my shot. I've heard of crews doing that before, but this was my first (personal) experience with it. At least I got the good shot before they did that!

With the sun getting rather low in the western sky, the Warbonnet leading this manifest finds a sunny spot as the train climbs out of the Littleton Trench about a mile away from the end of CTC and the start of ABS and Track Warrants.

Who knows how much longer this branch line will remain active! For the time being, however, it sees a train twice a week when UP's South Local comes to switch out one or two industries on the branch. Here, the power for the South Local is return light to the Joint Line, which crosses over Oxford on the bridge in the distance.

Near the east end of the Military Jct branch, UP's South Local throttle up in order to pull a huge string of loaded gondolas up the steep grade on the branch.

UP's South Local backs down the Military Jct branch on the south side of Oxford Avenue. Empty gondolas are being spotted at Western Metal Recycling so the scrap can be hauled away by rail.

The branch line at Military Jct runs across Santa Fe Drive west a few blocks along Oxford Avenue to Western Metals Recycling. I've wanted to get a shot of a train on this branch for years and finally got the opportunity on this afternoon.
