This southbound coal empty has just crossed over what used to be Brainard Drive. the asphalt is now gone and the remnants of the road are barricaded, but the crossing is still active the train still had to use its horn at the crossing. You can see the northbound that it is meeting in the siding at Broomfield in the distance.

There has been a bit of a downturn in rail traffic in the last couple of months, but you can definitely still find leasers around, particularly on BNSF. These interesting (not necessarily colorful, as they are mainly gray) units, leased from CitiRail, are always fun to find on a train. Not sure how much longer their lease will last!

The southbound Valmont coal empty heads south alongside Midway Blvd on the approach to the north siding switch of Broomfield. It is a beautiful (and hot) August afternoon as Longs Peak stands tall in the distance. The Valmont train has already received a warrant from the Front Range Sub dispatcher to proceed south to Denver (after stopping to align the south siding switch at Broomfield for the main track).

You might think something about this SD70MAC looks a bit strange. I thought so too. The nose looked too orange somehow. Then it hit me...the headlight is above the cab! On every BNSF SD70MAC that I remember seeing (prior to this one), the headlight is on the nose.

With the extension of the Broomfield siding to the north, Brainard Drive has been relocated about a quarter mile west. This is what is left of the original Brainard Drive grade crossing! The asphalt is gone, but the concrete crossing around the rails is still present. As are the crossing lights and gates which, incidentally, are still fully functional!

A pair of Warbonnets, both sporting a couple of orange components (unfortunately), leads a southbound baretable just south of Broomfield. The train is about to pass underneath US-36 near Church Ranch Lake.

The Denver area got hit by two snow storms over the course of four days. The first one left 15-24 inches of snow behind and the second added another 2-3 on top. This was the first (nearly) cloud-free morning in about five days.

Tried my best to get a rural looking shot despite the fact this area is anything but rural anymore! The Flat Iron Crossing mall is behind the train to the left and a relatively new condo complex is to the right. However, the Rockies look fantastic on a sunny February morning. Interestingly, you can actually see UP's Moffat Tunnel Sub on the mountains in the distance! Plainview is roughly above the double stacks (with Rainbow Cut above the first car) and tunnels 3 and 4 are above the lead unit.

It is 15°F outside but the sun is shining brightly on the stinky slinky as it pulls south on the main at Broomfield. You can just see the end DPU in the distance and you can also see Longs Peak on the right side of the picture, trying to break through some morning fog.

Who will reach the grade crossing first? The double stack is pulling in to the clear on the siding as a southbound molten sulfur train (called the "stinky slinky") starts pulling on the main. Both trains are blowing their horns as they approach Nickel Street.

It would seem that the siding at Broomfield hasn't been used in a day or two! The rail head is completely covered by snow even though there hasn't really been any snow fall in 24 hours.

It is a bit of a brisk morning out as this BNSF double stack starts pulling north along Church Ranch Lake. The train had been waiting here so as not to block any grade crossing until the southbound they were going to meet reached Broomfield. Now that said southbound had reached Broomfield, it is time to go!

As a blade train wraps around the fill in Westminster, commuters work to get through the construction on Wadsworth Blvd. The road has been under construction for a couple months as CDOT works to repave the road, changing it from asphalt to concrete in the process.

It about a quarter after eight in the morning and this pair of Warbonnets brings a "blade train" around the big fill in Westminster. The blades will be used on wind turbines at a wind farm.

A pair of Warbonnet Dash-9's pull south through the siding at Broomfield. They just met a northbound and have received a track warrant to continue south to Denver.

The Valmont coal empty just received its final warrant of the day, taking it from MP 17 to the Restricted Limits at Clear Creek. Despite slippery rails (thanks to the late summer rain shower), it didn't take long for the train to reach track speed.
