With the mornings passenger trains - the Ski Train and the California Zephyr - out of the way, the daily MNYRO is free to head west! Union Pacific commonly runs the MNYRO with coal power these days. It allows five or six units to be transfer to Glenwood Springs for staging as eastbound swing helpers.

It is a beautiful Thursday morning in as the westbound California Zephyr leaves Leyden behind. The dark patch on the slope is the result of a fire started by the West Local about ten days earlier.

The second westbound passenger train of the day heads west through Leyden. The Ski Train passed through here about an hour earlier as it headed for Winter Park.

Just west of the west switch of Leyden, two men work to put out a few fires started by a passing westbound that threw some sparks into the dry grass. It is probably lucky that the tracks are above the grass here as the fire burning up toward the tracks more than down toward the rest of the field.

An eastbound coal load heads into the siding at Leyden to meet the westbound Zephyr. You have to love the southern exposure of the sun in Winter!

An eastbound coal load (with some nice power to boot) is approaching the west switch of Leyden. The train will be going into the siding at Leyden to wait for at least one westbound to come out of Denver.

There are some amazing loops and horseshoe curves on the Craig Branch between Bond and Toponas. One such horseshoe curve is here, about a mile west of the siding of Crater. The head end of UP 5948 comes around the curve on the right while the tail end DPU's enter Tunnel 49 on the left side of the image.
