You gotta love that in 2009, you can still get a Rio Grande lettered engine crossing over a Rio Grande lettered bridge! UP 1989 is a mid-train swing helper on an eastbound coal load crossing over Indiana Street.

The eastbound Ski Train rounds the curve just west of Leyden (and the bridge over Indiana Street). The train would get clear signals for the remainder of the journey in to town.

A train full of tired skiers is only about 13 miles away from Union Station in Denver. I think this shot worked really well as a black and white photo.

At the west switch of Leyden, the Ski Train makes its way west about a half hour after sunrise. The train had to run through the siding as a coal load was waiting on the main track.

It is a beautiful Thursday morning in as the westbound California Zephyr leaves Leyden behind. The dark patch on the slope is the result of a fire started by the West Local about ten days earlier.
