Every so often, though, you'll get a really unique consist on the point of a train. The last day of summer saw clear skies and temperatures in the 70's and 80's. Two days later, temperatures are in the low 50's and it is raining. The lead unit was BNSF 9798, so I though an SD70MAC would be a nice change of pace. Turns out I doubly surprised as two green and cream SD70MACs were the only power on the train, the Longmont Turn. On this particular trip, only the rails on curves were being ground. The grinder was skipping right over the straight stretches. The military train was carrying support vehicles (trucks and hummers). With the two green and white SD40-2's for power, this looks like it could have been taken 10 or even 20 years ago! In fact, the power was extremely unique, with a BNSF warbonnet leading, followed by brand new KCS SD70ACe (#4009) and the BNSF 7920.
