Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
This Ski Train, in its 69th Season, sits idling on the siding at Fraser. I sincerely hope that the train will run for another 69 seasons! The train holds on the siding at Fraser for four to five hours during the day while waiting to pick up skiers back at Winter Park between 3:30pm and 4:00pm.

Okay, this one is for all of you black and white fans! The westbound California Zephyr highballs Tabernash under some dramatic high country Colorado skies. The temperature outside is just over zero degrees.

Hmmm, do we have diesel or steam here? The second P42 on Amtrak was having a bad smoking day. In addition to smoke, a fair amount of snow is being kicked up too. The highway off to the left is US-40.

The Ski Train is heading back to Fraser where it will wait until it is time to pick up its passengers. Not the signal at Fraser in the distance. Even further in the distance, skiers are enjoying a great day of skiing on the slopes at Winter Park.

Clouds were a bit unpredictable on this morning and the temperature was a chilly three degrees below zero! After wying at Tabernash, the Ski Train is on its way back toward Fraser. Looks like the Ski Train could stand a good power wash.

The Ski Train has once again been successfully wyed at Tabernash, the train is nearing the east end of the siding and will proceed east to Fraser on an advanced approach (flashing yellow) signal.

As Amtrak's F40PH's started to age in the early 1990's, Amtrak starting looking for a new alternative to replace them. GE and EMD competed for the business and GE ultimately won with the P42DC. However, Amtrak did take a handful of F59PH's (EMDs answer to the F40PH). Since they all run in California, they are hard to find elsewhere. I was happy to capture it on this day!

I love the view down the tracks looking from Tabernash east towards Fraser. It is a very long, straight shot. In this picture, you can see the clear intermediate signal as well as the signal at the west end of Fraser. Fall colors are starting to make this area a very photogenic spot, not only for railfans but for everyone!

The California Zephyr is in between it's last two station stops west of Denver here at Tabernash. The train will leave Tabernash on a clear signal and run the four miles east to Fraser for another stop.

The DRGW Heritage Unit (UP 1989) and the CNW Heritage Unit (UP 1995) look pretty good lashed up together. Rumor has it that one of UP's Board Members was a fan (or perhaps even worked for) the CNW, which is likely why this is the second heritage unit chosen for the trip.

An eastbound BNSF manifest holding the mainline a Tabernash necessitated UP's Board of Directors Special to run through the siding. Here, the special is approaching the west end of the siding.

Coming to the end of its journey, a relatively short MPVNY approaches Tennyson Street just west of C&S Junction. BNSF's Golden Sub (which ultimately runs to Coors Brewery) is in the foreground. In the distance, the Rocky Mountains keep snowy weather away from the plains.
