UP 1837, a snoot-nose SD40-2, puts on a bit of an exhaust show as the engineer throttle up to start pulling the (roughly) 40 car Limon Local eastbound on Main 1 toward a green signal. UP 6168 was delivered as SP 139 in April 1995. I was a sophomore in high school at the time, and remember seeing those new scarlet and gray units sometimes when I was getting lunch. The snoot-nose SD40-2, delivered to Union Pacific March 1978, has had a bit of tagging on it. That stands in sharp contrast to UP 1484, whose paint looks pristine. Unlike the last few weeks when I have observed the local, the crew has a utility man (or "U-Man") to help protect shoves and check hand brakes. While the conductor on the Limon Local works to tie on a FRED (or End of Train device) to what will become the last car of the local, four random guys are walking between yard tracks! They are carrying backpacks, stepladders, and bottles of water. Were they just in the midst of a little graffiti work? I cannot say for sure, but it was quite odd to see! The engineer is now on the train alone, and the conductor is going to watch the train roll by to, again, ensure there are no sticking hand brakes for the journey east to Limon. This particular unit is probably wearing the same paint as when it was delivered to Union Pacific in November 1995. An interesting note about this unit. It was actually ordered by Chicago North Western. But it was ready for delivery after the UP acquired the CNW, so it was delivered in UP colors. The unit is sitting on Main 1, getting ready to enter the yard. You can see there are a lot of cars waiting. 84 cars in all, plus a GP40-2 and an SD40-2.
