The sun is getting very low in the sky as an eastbound coal loads sits on the main track at Tabernash. It is waiting for a westbound empty that is still in the Moffat Tunnel. Eastbound loads hold on the main at Tabernash instead of the siding because there is a road crossing halfway through the siding.

At the back of the train, a brakeman is aligning the switch from the wye (which the Ski Train is currently on) to the siding. After backing onto the siding, the train will continue east on the siding and return to the siding at Fraser.

While sitting in the Ski Train on the wye at Tabernash, Amtrak 5 had to use the siding to continue west due to a coal train on the Main. AMTK 171 and AMTK 5 lead the way through the Colorado snow.

UP 5871 leads a westbound coal empty into the siding at Tabernash a few miles west of Fraser. There is an eastbound coal load currently on the main waiting for a couple trains. The eastbound is holding the main because there is a grade crossing on the siding that would be blocked if the train held the siding.

An interesting mix of power - BNSF Warbonnet 4719, BNSF Green SD40-2s 7884 and 8004, and faded BNSF H2 4480 - leads this eastbound BNSF manifest through Tabernash.

A sight that you will very seldomly see. The lead unit of the Ski Train, Amtrak 242, couples onto the front of a work train at Tabernash and is pushing it back out of the way of the wye so the Ski Train can complete its turn-around.

On this particular Saturday, a UP work train was blocking a leg of the wye when the Ski Train was attempting to turn around. The power on the work train was shut off, however, so the lead unit from the Ski Train was cut off to move the work train.

In the 1998-1999 season, the Ski Train stopped using leased power from Union Pacific (and the power car), and started using leased F40PH's from Amtrak. Two F40's were used during this first season, which turned out to be a disaster when one of the units went down. On one trip, the train couldn't make it up the hill! Here, the two leased F40's can be seen on the point of the train as the train backs into the wye at Tabernash.

Remember when the Ski Train cars had the name of the car on its side? Today, the side of every car simply says "The Ski Train". Unfortunately, a grinder was used to remove the names before "The Ski Train" was applied, so the old name plaques are lost forever. However, here is the North Park (Car 5) sitting on the wye at Tabernash in January 1999.
