After knocking down the clear (green) signal at the east end of Thompson, the westbound Zephyr is continuing at track speed on the main alongside the 7,210-foot siding. The siding here at Thompson is one of only five that are available for meets over the course of roughly 100 miles in the Utah desert. 12 other sidings are being used to store cars. Note that a P40DC is actually leading the Zephyr on this nice May evening.

UP is at varying stages when it comes to replacing the old DRGW signals across the Utah desert. Many control points have been replaced. Others, such as the signals at the east end of Thompson, have new signal masts in place, but the signal heads have not yet been put on.

In fantastic golden light at the end of the day, the westbound Zephyr approaches a clear (green) signal at the east end of Thompson. In the distance, lurking in the shadows of afternoon thunderstorms, is the 12,331-foot peak of Mt Waas.

The massive landscape of the Utah desert dwarfs the westbound Zephyr as it hustles west on its journey toward Emeryville, CA. The sun is getting low in the western sky as the Zephyr, about two hour late, is between Sagers and Thompson.

Making its way through the S-Curve east of Thompson, four BNSF units lead a Denver-Provo manifest through the Utah desert. The train met the eastbound Zephyr at Cisco, but will not meet another train before reaching two main tracks at Helper.

The curve at the east end of the siding of Thompson is a great place to shoot eastbounds in the morning. Since the desert can be unreliable at best (as far as trains go), the California Zephyr is always a good candidate! About ten minutes late here, the eastbound Zephyr just passed through the virtual ghost town of Thompson.

An unusual site for the Utah Desert...at least in 2012. In the 1980's, it was not uncommon to see the Kansas on the back of the California Zephyr when Rio Grande officials needed to go from Denver to Salt Lake City or vice versa. On those trips, the Zephyr would usually have a Rio Grande unit as a pilot on the front of the train.

For years, this car was known as the Wilson McCarthy when it was a business car for Rio Grande. It was renamed the Kansas and served many years on the Ski Train as one of the private cars (along with the Utah and California). Now, it has been rebranded for the "American Railway Explorer". This is a new service that will be based out of Los Angeles for trips up and down the coast. This may well be the last time the car is on former DRGW trackage! One last nail in the Ski Train coffin.

The westbound California Zephyr is right on time as it makes its way through the desolate scenery of the Utah Desert. On this day, the Zephyr happens to have a bonus car! The "Kansas" (previously the Wilson McCarthy) which was used as a business car for years on the Rio Grande, and later on the Ski Train, is being sent to Los Angeles, its new home.

The Potash Local is a weekly job that runs from Grand Junction, CO to Potash, UT (about 15 miles southwest of Moab). The train only runs on Friday's and had clear blue skies on this day as the train passes just east of Thompson, UT.
