The siding here at Thompson is one of only five that are available for meets over the course of roughly 100 miles in the Utah desert. 12 other sidings are being used to store cars. Since the desert can be unreliable at best (as far as trains go), the California Zephyr is always a good candidate! In the 1980's, it was not uncommon to see the Kansas on the back of the California Zephyr when Rio Grande officials needed to go from Denver to Salt Lake City or vice versa. It was renamed the Kansas and served many years on the Ski Train as one of the private cars (along with the Utah and California). Now, it has been rebranded for the "American Railway Explorer". This is a new service that will be based out of Los Angeles for trips up and down the coast. This may well be the last time the car is on former DRGW trackage! One last nail in the Ski Train coffin.
