Unfortunately, Conductor Edward George West and Brakeman John I. Beaird lost their lives. A plaque was added on the west portal of Tunnel 26 in their honor. While insignificant next to human lives, the 3115 and 3010 etched in the tunnel portal represent the numbers of the two Rio Grande engines that were destroyed in the accident.
