A UP Board of Directors special departed from Union Station right around 12:30pm for a westbound trip from Denver to Kremmling. Mid-afternoon light is not very generous as the special approaches the Apex at North Yard.

An eastbound BNSF manifest holding the mainline a Tabernash necessitated UP's Board of Directors Special to run through the siding. Here, the special is approaching the west end of the siding.

The DRGW Heritage Unit (UP 1989) and the CNW Heritage Unit (UP 1995) look pretty good lashed up together. Rumor has it that one of UP's Board Members was a fan (or perhaps even worked for) the CNW, which is likely why this is the second heritage unit chosen for the trip.

In the distance, UP's Board of Directors Special is approaching with UP 1989 on the point. The Granby depot still stands, used twice a day for the California Zephyr.

A 300mm look at UP's Board of Directors Special as it makes track speed through Granby. The train included 15 cars and a bunch of upper management for the trip west.

A wide-angle shot of UP's Board of Directors Special as it passes through Granby. The train is on the main. The siding is the next track closest to the camera, followed by the Granby house track.

After shooting the train at Granby, I was unable to catch it again until Byers Canyon. Between Granby and Sulpher, trains (passenger trains in particular) make very good time.

UP's Board of Directors Special snakes its way through the glorious Byers Canyon. The train is approaching the west end of the canyon. The river is running a bit low, which is common in the fall, at the base of the canyon.

Just outside of Byers Canyon, UP's Board of Directors Special throttles up again to make track speed for the remainder of the journey to Kremmling. Trains make their way through Byers Canyon at 20 MPH, but passenger trains accelerate to 70 MPH once they are clear of the west end.

Fall colors are starting to take hold in the Rocky Mountains as UP's Board of Directors Special slows on the approach to Kremmling. Once there, the train will drop its important passengers and tie down for the night.

UP's Board of Directors Special has reached its destination, just over 100 miles west of Denver Union Station. The train had a great run, making the entire trip in about three hours! The fleet of SUVs in the picture will transport the board members to their next destination (where ever that may be), away from the tracks.

Running about an hour behind schedule, the eastbound California Zephyr departs Kremmling on a clear signal. A rare visitor to Colorado, an F59PH leads the train. The unit is probably going for maintenance in Chicago (or Beech Grove).

Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr is picking up some speed after passing a slow order at the east switch of Kremmling. The train will not be making a stop until it reaches the depot in Granby.

The California Zephyr is in between it's last two station stops west of Denver here at Tabernash. The train will leave Tabernash on a clear signal and run the four miles east to Fraser for another stop.
