Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
On a partly cloudy February morning, the Ski Train leaves Big Ten behind and rounds the curve into Clay. Note the tracks leading into Big Ten from Rocky in the lower left had corning of the picture.

At the west end of Clay, the Ski Train has nothing but clear tracks ahead. I am standing in the middle of Jefferson County Open Space for this shot. Can't drive here, but hiking is A-OK.

Figured I throw this shot into the mix because it is kind of a different perspective on a common location. The westbound Ski Train is just about to duck into Tunnel 1. This is the shot as seen from Jefferson County Open Space between CO-72 and West Clay.

Got some time on your hands? I think the crew of this eastbound Stockton to Denver trackage rights train can probably relate! The train is in the hole at Cliff waiting for the Ski Train.

An interesting set of power on the Stockton to Denver train stopped at Cliff. A shabby-looking Warbonnet C40-8W - sandwiched by a pair of ES44DCs - are patiently waiting for the arrival of the Ski Train. The third unit, BNSF 7200, looks fresh out of the shop!

Despite a little bit of dirt on the outside of the Ski Train, it still looks spectacular on the Moffat main with the Continental Divide as a back drop.

Amazing to think that this train, in one form or another, has been running on these rails for nearly 70 years! The last two cars here (Utah and Kansas) were business cars on the Rio Grande and were often seen on the back of Amtrak between Denver and Salt Lake. Now, they have a home on the Ski Train. It should be noted that back then, the Kansas was named the Wilson McCarthy.

The familiar face of a P42DC shows itself as it comes around the corning on the main between Tolland and East Portal. On the western slope, the Ski Train has unloaded its passengers and is in the clear, allowing Amtrak to continue running right on time.

It is quite possible that you have seen pictures from this location before (although not on my site until today!) ... One of those locations that I have always said "I'll get to it one of these days". Well, the day finally came! The westbound California Zephyr crosses over the road to East Portal as it makes its way toward the Moffat Tunnel. Note how difficult it would be to add a second track through here (if Tolland and East Portal were ever connected, as has been proposed in the past).

A few trees are preventing this view from being really fantastic. The curve that the Zephyr is approaching in the distance leads into East Portal. In another mile, the Zephyr will be in the Moffat Tunnel under the Continental Divide, towering in the background.

What do you do when you need to transport a lot of light power from Denver to Glenwood Springs? Throw it on any train you can find going that direction! Eight units (six of which will be dropped off for swing power in Glenwood Springs) lead up the MNYRO-08 at Crescent.

An interesting view of a westbound making its way around Big Ten on the approach to Clay. In this single shot, you can see portions of track than spans three miles.

Nearly two miles of the track visible in the distance, this westbound coal empty is coming out of Clay and is on the approach to the Blue Mountain grade crossing.

Peekaboo! A westbound coal empty pops out of the west portal of Tunnel 1. If that tunnel portal - now just over 50 years old - could only talk...

A look westbound from near the west portal of Tunnel 1. I was planning on doing this shot with the end DPU from this coal empty, but there was only one unit....and it was facing the "wrong way"!
