After descending off of Raton Pass, this westbound BNSF work train heads down the mainline at Raton. While Amtrak passes this location twice a day, this is the first manifest through here in months.

I've been taking pictures of trains (or at least riding along with my dad as he took pictures!) for 30 years...yet this is the first pictures I've ever taken a picture of a functional semaphore! The eastbound signal is currently red as a westbound work train approaches.

While I thought the former Rio Grande was low on traffic, that's nothing compared to Raton! This is the first freight to run over these rails in the New Mexican desert in over a year.

A westbound work train passes by intermediate semaphores near Colmor. Note the blade pointing toward the sky on the left side of the picture. That is a clear signal for this train, and the signal will drop (quite literally) to red as the train passes. After dropping to red, the blade on the left will be parallel to the ground, like the one on the right.

Some of the last-active semaphore signals in the country can be found on BNSF's Raton Subdivision. Both sets of intermediates here are red as a result of the work train that just passed by.

This westbound work train passes the semaphore at the east end of Watrous. Note the blade on the semaphore is about halfway between being vertical and horizontal. As the train passes the signal, it is dropping from green to red.

Halfway between Wagon Mound and Levy, a pair of intermediates stand showing green in either direction. No train will pass through these intermediates again until the eastbound Southwest Chief later in the day. April 10, 2010 was a very unique date indeed as three trains passed through the signals.

On the main track in Trinidad, this northbound BNSF coal empty gets a very quick crew change! Engineers talk briefly before switching rolls. The crew that just got off will be bussed to La Junta to wait for a train to take home to Amarillo. The new crew will take the train north to Denver.

In Walsenburg, ABS signaling ends when traveling north toward Pueblo. Here, a dwarf signal marks the start of ABS when heading south. The C&S (BNSF) mainline is on the left and the Rio Grande (UP) mainline is on the right.

These tracks were once owned by Rio Grande before the Espee (and UP) came along. The tracks lead over Le Veta Pass to Alamosa (and beyond). UP recently sold the line to the San Luis and Rio Grande railroad. UP now interchanges with the SLRG right here in Walsenburg.
