It has been a particularly cold and snowy Winter and Spring, so it was really nice to find moderate temperatures and this northbound coal empty hanging out near Church Ranch Lake on my way in to work.

Due to the grade crossing at Broomfield, northbounds that are waiting to meet southbounds at Broomfield will typically hold on the main alongside Church Ranch Lake about a mile south of the siding. A 10,000-foot-long train could stop here without blocking any crossing.

While I am (and have always been) an EMD fan at heart, I must admit I do like the look of the latest generation of engines to roll out off the General Electric assembly line.

Unfortunately, I personally feel that EMD has gone from the masters of "aesthetically pleasing" engine design to "what were they thinking"? Particularly when it comes to the nose. Now, obviously the goal is to be functional, not pretty. I realize that...but EMD used to mix function and aesthetics. Something I think they have lost.
