The local has been using the main at Mesa, so the special was run through the siding. It will stop briefly at the east end of Mesa to wait for a track warrant from DS-86. The train was called in Grand Junction at 10:30pm the night before and actually made amazing time. Was hoping to get a few shots of the train on the Moffat, but it was in Denver by 7:00am and had a new crew called at 8:15am. In general, things were sunny...however, there were a few random flurries blowing around. In the summer, these probably would've been random rain showers. This UP special is just east of Strasburg and is approaching a Form B. The bridge over the tracks in Strasburg is being replaced. Here, an eastbound UP special crosses over that bridge right at the same time a cloud decides to float on by. Wouldn't you know it! The special is approaching an approach signal at West Byers. As you can see, the train broke in to two. The conductor walked back and set the brakes on 30 cars before walking the rest of the train. Meanwhile, the engineer had to isolate the rear DPU. When the conductor walked back up, the train was put back together and the brakes were knocked off. Then, the engineer brought the rear DPU online and recharged the brakes. The entire process took several hours. There was an 8,000-foot MSIDV out of Limon, but it made a reverse move to Limon as the crew only had 90 minutes to work and the coal train had the line blocked. This eastbound special stopped here, west of the siding at Byers, and held for several hours while waiting for the coal load to get on the move again.
