The sun was just a few minutes away from poking out from behind the clouds, but it set up this interesting mix of light and dark! The training is approaching the east end of CTC on the Limon Sub. Of interest, the first two units are both former Espee units! UP 6360 was originally SP 316, delivered in July 1995 and patched to UP on August 1, 2003. The train was loaded at the West Elk Mine on the North Fork branch in Western Colorado and is now headed for the plains on the Limon Sub. The last time I caught the unit leading a train in Colorado was almost exactly four years ago when it led a manifest on the Moffat on July 13, 2014. The train is passing underneath I-70 in the background, a highway that the tracks will more or less parallel until Limon, CO. DS-86 was unable to get the switch at the west end to throw to the siding. So, the crew had to take the switch in hand throw and was flagged past the red signal at West Mesa in to the siding. It now has five cars in the tow heading back to the Roydale yard. It will have to hold the main for a bit though as UP 1982 is leading a coal train east in to the siding. The local has been using the main at Mesa, so the special was run through the siding. It will stop briefly at the east end of Mesa to wait for a track warrant from DS-86. Today, I was able to catch another eastbound coal load, but this one was led by a Norfolk Southern "catfish". On this particular day, however, I'm on the east side of town! A Norfolk Southern unit leads the eastbound coal load on the main at Mesa. Much of the Limon Sub in Aurora parallels Smith Road.
