A pair of ES44C4s lead a westbound baretable train just west of Ibis on BNSF's Needles Subdivision in southern California. The train is on Main 1 here, which has a slightly lesser grade than Main 2 just west of Ibis.

Not a normal picture for ColoradoRailfan, to be sure! While on a road trip, I stopped to get this shot of a westbound baretable train just west of Ibis on the Needles Sub (near Needles, CA). There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the temperature was 115°F!

While on a road trip in California and Arizona, I happened to catch the hottest train on BNSF's system. This is the ZNBYWSP9-25A, which is mainly composed of UPS, FedEx, and Amazon trailers. The train is on Main 1 here, just west of Kingman, AZ. Main 1 and Main 2 are on two different grades here, so Main 2 is not in sight.

Five GEs lead the hottest intermodal train on the BNSF system as the train moves east on Main 1 in Kingman Canyon. Through the canyon, Main 1 and Main 2 are on two different alignments. You can see Main 2, slightly higher, in the background.

Part of Kingman Canyon is already cast in shadow as an eastbound intermodal train rolls through on Main 1. This intermodal train is the hottest on the BNSF system and has a lot of UPS, FedEx, and Amazon trailers in tow. Kingman Canyon is a beautiful place to spend some time and just watch some trains.

Charging east out of Kingman, we find a high priority intermodal train with five units on the point, working to move back up to 70 MPH (track speed) after slowing through Kingman Canyon.

With the tight curves of Kingman Canyon and the town of Kingman nearly behind it, this intermodal train is accelerating back up to 70 MPH on Main 1. You can see the speed sign, tilted at a 45° angle, indicating a reduction in speed for passenger trains (45 MPH) and freight trains (40 MPH) coming up in a mile.

As Amazon continues to grow, their fleet of trailers is growing as well. And, as one might expect, they are shipping by rail more and more! The rather unique blue trailers are a welcome sight on intermodal trains on BNSF's Transcon route.

During the short few hours I had to spend along the BNSF Transcon during a road trip, I found it rather ironic that two of the three trains I ended up shooting happened to be baretables! Here, a pre-production ES44DC and a C44-9W lead a baretable west on the Transcon just west of Kingman, AZ along classic Route 66.
