Mr Jim Barton, Vice President at the Colorado Railroad Museum, is in the green vest watching as BNSF moves DRGW 5401. The moving of the Tunnel Motor from its home of the past eight years (at Coors Brewing Company) to the Museum was his project and he is overseeing the move here.

Opportunities to get shots of anything Rio Grande are (obviously) few and far between in 2018! So a change to see the fly letters on the side of a Tunnel Motor on an active track was something I did not want to miss.

SD40-2s BNSF 1826 and BNSF 1665 escort a cousin Dash-2, DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) east near milepost 14.5 of BNSF's Golden Sub. DRGW 5401 has been stored on Coors property for the past eight years, waiting for the Colorado Railroad Museum to work out a space for it. The unit had been stored next to the building almost directly above the cab of BNSF 1826.

Not a sight you see every day! A Rio Grande SD40T-2 on BNSF rails in Golden, CO. BNSF is moving DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) from the Coors Brewery to the Colorado Railroad Museum, just a few miles away. Note the "M" on the mountain in the distance, representing the Colorado School of Mines.

DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) was the last unpatched Rio Grande Tunnel Motor to lead a train on the Moffat! In 2004, it led a work train from Phippsburg, CO to North Yard. It was also one of the last four Tunnel Motors to depart Helper, UT. Fitting that its brother (DRGW 5371, also one of the last four) was preserved and now live in Ogden, UT.

Great seeing Rio Grande fly letters on the side of an SD40T-2 in 2018. Sure, DRGW 5401 (patched as UP 9871) is not operating under its own power, but with an SD40-2 on either side of it, it was not too hard to imagine!

Unfortunately, no SD40T-2s are still on the roster of any Class 1 railroad in 2018. However, it is nice to see SD40-2s going through multiple rebuild (and repaint) programs. BNSF 1665 is a good example, sporting a very fresh paint scheme.
