Some nice light broke through for what of the better shots of the day as UP 4014 and train pass through the OS at CP W601 on Main 2, passing by a short MOW crew that is working on Main 1. The tiny town just barely visible in the distance in Rock River, WY, with a population of 211.

Passing through the OS at CP W594 (Lookout), the weather is starting to improve over the morning. The winds are still very high, but the clouds are looking to clear up a bit. UP 4014 and train continue to make their way closer to Laramie for their next stop.

At Bosler, WY, UP 4014 is steaming east on Main 2. A couple of MOW cars sit in a house track that is located off of Main 1.

The Big Boy crosses over the Laramie River on Main 2, right around eight miles north of its next stop in the fourth-largest city in Wyoming, Laramie. As you can see, UP 4014 attracted dozens of railfans out to capture some shots on the journey east to Cheyenne.

UP 4014 rounds the bend from Tie Siding on Main 1, leading into the cut on the west side of Hermosa Tunnel. For whatever reason, UP typically runs trains on the left train between Tie Siding at Cheyenne. The tracks are, of course, CTC. So the dispatcher can run trains either direction on either main at his or her discretion. However, that discretion is generally the lefthand main.

I have always been a little bit fascinated by Hermosa Tunnel. It is one of only a handful of tunnels on UP's Overland Route, and certainly the most famous. The double-bore tunnel is just shy of 2,000 feet in length, running through relatively soft dirt near the top of Sherman Hill. I was happy I had the chance to capture UP 4014 and train approaching the west portal of the tunnel on Main 1, on its return journey to home (Cheyenne).

While UP's Main 3 (between Speer and Dale Jct) does have four siding on it, it is almost exclusively used by westbounds as it has a lesser grade than the original grade that Mains 1 and 2 follow. Main 3 is several miles longer than Mains 1 and 2, but the lesser grade is worth the added distance. Main 3 was opened in 1953, nearly a century after the original line. Since UP 4014 is currently running eastbound (and down grade), like most other trains, it is on Main 1 this afternoon between Granite and Buford.

After running on Main 1 between Dale Jct and Borie, UP 4014 and train have crossed over to Main 2, and then over to the Borie Cutoff. This move surprised several railfans, who were expecting the Big Boy to run on Main 1 all the way to Cheyenne, rather than take the cutoff up to Speer Jct.

UP 4014 and train are currently running on the Borie Cutoff, rather than on Mains 1 or 2, which you can see in the distance. This stretch of track is roughly five miles long, and connects Speer Jct (southwest of Cheyenne) with the Overland Route. Trains coming up the Greeley Sub from Denver that are headed west, and have no stop in Cheyenne, will take this track. Same with their eastbound counterparts. Here, the Big Boy will run to Speer Jct and make a reverse move from Speer to the yard at Cheyenne.

At Speer Jct, UP 4014 wraps around the southwest leg of the wye, moving toward the Greeley Subdivision. Once the entire train in on the Greeley Sub, it will make a reverse move toward Main 3, making a reverse move all the way to Cheyenne. A distance of roughly 10 miles.

The Big Boy is leaving the wye at Speer Jct behind, pulling onto the single track main of the Greeley Sub. Right here, the tracks cross over BNSF's Front Range Subdivision. A northbound BNSF manifest was actually not too far off, but the timing was not quite right for an "over/under" shot.

Although today was devoted to chasing UP 4014 on its trip from Rawlins back to Cheyenne, you gotta take advantage of other shots as they present themselves! While the steam train was prepping to make a reverse move out of the frame to the left, BNSF's Denver-Laurel manifest passes underneath UP's Greeley Sub. Something on the train sparked a couple of small fires along the right-of-way, one of which you can see burning off in the distance.

UP 4014 and train have started a reverse move from the Greeley Sub main, back toward Main 3 north of Speer Jct. The train will continue a reverse move roughly 10 miles back to the yard at Cheyenne. UP police were present at Speer Jct, making sure to keep railfans back from the mainline.
