The diesel on the train is UP 7813. It is an ES44AC delivered to UP a little over a year earlier. It's dynamic brakes are used when proceeding down a grade so the train doesn't have to rely entirely on air brakes. There were a fair number of railfans chasing the train on this day...and not all of them used the best judgment! UP 844 emerges from the west portal of Hermosa on its way west. It is leading a UP passenger special going on a month long tour. Each Spring, the cars are moved to their summer base in Council Bluffs, IA. This year, the 20 car train had the CNW Heritage Unit (UP 1995) on the point as it made its journey. It was painted in a scheme reminiscent of Air Force One. It was so-painted in honor of the George HW Bush Presidential Library, which had a special section on trains (and their history) in America. Nearly three years later, I was finally lucky enough to catch this unit on the point of a manifest approaching Cheyenne on UP's Overland Route.
