The sign in the foreground clearly indicates there will be eight tracks total. At least one of those tracks will be reserved for "heavy rail" trains such as Amtrak. Hopefully there will be a second track dedicated to heavy rail so trains like Cheyenne Frontier Days will have a home, when needed. New buildings (both residential lofts and hotels) are under construction and the new dome-type enclosure for the eight tracks behind Union Station is clearly visible. And while "Amshack" tends to be a pejorative term used for crummy, tiny depots, that is not the case in Denver. The temporary depot is, in my opinion, nicer than a lot of permanent depots! In the meantime, this is the building that Amtrak will use in Denver for it's passengers. It had been a light bulb distributor for years, but has now been taken over and repainted. All the station tracks are being ripped up. As of this shot, Track 1 is the only one left. A new temporary platform is being built a few hundred yards east of the current platform as seen in this shot. Amtrak will probably back in to the (existing) Track 1 for the last time in early 2011. The spare P42 is taken out of the stub track and added to the front of the train. On the west side of the divide, the eastbound Zephyr was wyed at Tabernash and turned into the westbound Zephyr. Passengers from that train were bussed to Denver and placed on this train to continue east to Chicago. Likewise, passengers from this train were bussed to Fraser and placed on the new westbound Zephyr. A rock slide on the Moffat kept the train from making it west. The head end P42 was pulled off the train at Clay, run around the train, and tacked on the tail end. In preparation for the major construction project that is up and coming at Union Station, tracks 2 through 5 have been ripped out. Once a temporary depot has been setup for Amtrak, track 1 will be gone too. Once construction is complete in several years, the tracks will be put back in. If you are along the Moffat Tunnel Route, you'll be seeing this facing heading toward you at grade crossing a lot in the next three months. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad will run from the end of December to the end of March. Hopefully, they'll turn a profit and the train will be around for many more seasons to come.
