The final few miles of the Cane Creek Subdivision follow along Potash Road, current still quite a little ways below the tracks, both following the winding Colorado River. The rock formations you can see if you are lucky enough to be on this passenger special are simply amazing.

Just beyond the cut at the south end Bootlegger Canyon this UP passenger special continues south toward Potash. The train has roughly seven miles left on its journey. If you look closely, you can see a nice photo line of railfans set up at the south end of the cut on the right side of the picture. They are standing on the Corona Arch Trailhead, which happens to cross the tracks!

After stopping for an official photo op, UP 5898 and special continue rolling south at the south end of Bootlegger Canyon. This is quite possibly my favorite shot of the day. Crystal clear blue sky, fantastic lighting, the red rock of the canyon, and some nice, lush green included at the bottom of the canyon.

UP 5898 and passenger special has come to a stop here in Bootlegger Canyon to set up for an official corporate photo op. The Cane Creek Subdivision was built between August 1961 and the end of 1962 by the Denver and Rio Grande Western. While no (public) passenger train ever traveled on the branch under Rio Grande, I am not sure if the railroad ever ran an officer's special train down the branch. It is certainly possible that this is the first time in history that a passenger train has run through Bootlegger Canyon!

UP 5898 and train are slowing here in Bootlegger Canyon, looking for a nice place to stop for an official corporate photo op! It is a great place to set up for one, with Corona Arch clearly visible in the top-left quadrant of the shot.

After emerging from Moab Tunnel, this UP passenger special is slowly rolling through Bootlegger Canyon. High above the train, we can see the famous Corona Arch on the left side of the frame. One of the countless natural arch formations that can be found in and around Arches National Park. Corona Arch itself is actually location outside of the park.

About 15 miles south of Brendel (where the Cane Creek Subdivision starts, branching away from the mainline), UP 5898 and special cross over Bartlett Wash on the approach to Mill Canyon Road.

This Union Pacific passenger special brought out a lot of railfans on this very unique trip south on the Cane Creek Subdivision. There were no fewer than two dozen railfans (and likely more) trackside at various points, getting shots of the unique move.

This 400mm shot of a UP passenger special on the Cane Creek Subdivision really sets up a nice background with the rocky Book Cliffs visible off in the distance near the Green River Subdivision mainline.

UP 5898 and this passenger special have left the high speed mainline of the Green River Subdivision behind and the train is now heading south on the 25 MPH Cane Creek Subdivision. The subdivision runs almost 40 miles south toward Moab, UT, actually ending southwest of Moab at Potash, UT.

UP's Potash Local swings away from the Colorado River and toward Bootlegger Canyon so it can reach Moab Tunnel cutting eight miles off the journey cars must travel to reach the same point on the north side. The canyon was cut out for the rails in 1963 when the Cane Creek Sub was originally constructed.

The engineer on UP's Potash Local gives a friendly wave to several onlookers (out of the frame) in the Corona Arch Trailhead parking lot. The four units on the train are taking 26 loaded covered hoppers back to Grand Junction.
