The crew on this westbound UP intermodal train get to see something they likely are not particularly used to see, and quite possibly were not expecting as a rerouted California Zephyr comes toward them on Main 2. The Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming due to a wildfire in Colorado that has the tracks closed near Glenwood Springs.

A westbound UP stack train crosses over Remount Road west of Cheyenne on UP's Overland Route. The elephant-style intermodal train is a nice change of pace from the type of traffic common to Colorado, which sees far more coal and manifest traffic than intermodal. The train is being led by a Tier-4 credit ES44AH.

The eastbound California Zephyr crosses over Laramie River on Main 2 just west (geographically north) of Laramie, WY. The Grizzly Creek wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has closed UP's Glenwood Springs Sub and, as a result, the Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming between Salt Lake City and Denver. Interestingly, this is the same train set that I rode in just six days early on a return trip from Glenwood Springs to Denver.

It took several years, but EMD finally got the SD70ACe-T4 out on the rails. It is a beefy looking unit, with a much larger long hood than an SD70ACe. This is no doubt to accommodate the equipment needed to meet Tier 4 emissions standards. This prime mover is actually a 4-stroke engine as EMD (Caterpillar) was unable to meet Tier 4 standards using a 2-stroke engine. One great thing is the return of the teardrop windshield on the UP models.

Amazingly, when traveling between Sidney, NE and Cheyenne, WY, there was not a single train to be found on the Overland! The first train encountered was this eastbound grain train at Borie a few miles west of Cheyenne. It was a good catch though as an SD70ACe-T4 was leading the train on Main 2.

A large group of people converged on Medicine Bow to check out UP 4014 as it stopped for a maintenance check on Main 1. The Big Boy established protection that prevented trains from coming through on Main 2 during the stop. UP allowed spectators to walk on the rails to get pictures. Two UP police officers were present to ensure everyone's safety.

A ton of credit goes to the UP Steam Team for bringing UP 4014 back to life. After spending over 50 years on display, the team rebuilt it and converted it to run on oil. Only 25 Big Boys were built and eight remain in existence today (4004, 4005, 4006, 4012, 4014, 4017, 4018, and 4023). These beasts are 132 feet long and weighs 625 tons.

UP 4014 and train are slowing as it approaching the grade crossing in Medicine Bow, WY. The train will make a stop here in Medicine Bow so the steam crew can check out the 4014. These mechanical stops are quite common on long steam journeys.

The clouds have moved in and light rain is starting to fall as UP 4014 passed the S-Curves east of Rock River. The clouds are actually quite helpful, as this shot is taken from the north side of the rails. On a sunny day, this side of the train would be cast is shadows. The temperature is a fairly mild 50°F.

There are some fantastic S-Curves just east of Rock River, WY. Other than a pair of wires that annoying traverse the scene, the shot of UP 4014 heading west is a mighty fine one as steam leaks away from the from the Big Boy.

With its mechanical stop in Laramie completed, UP 4014 and crew head west on Main 1, crossing over the Laramie River in the wide open range of Wyoming. The train is heading railroad west, which is geographically north at this particular location.

While waiting for UP 4014 to depart from Laramie, this westbound ballast train came blasting through with some colorful red and silver ballast cars. An SD70M led the way west.

Just east of Laramie, UP 4014 and train are slowing on Main 3 as they prepare to stop on Main 1 at the Laramie Depot for a mechanical stop of about 45 minutes. The clouds are slowly starting to roll in from the west.

On a windy September morning, UP 4014 leads a 10-car passenger train west on Main 3 between Tie Siding and Laramie. Between Tie Siding and Laramie, Mains 1 and 2 follow a very different grade from Main 3. Main 3 has a steeper grade, so it is generally not used by heavier trains.
