Union Pacific police made sure to back people way off the tracks with the approach of this Z-train on Main 1, passing by UP 4014 and train, stopped on Main 2. As the Z-train passed by and beyond the crowd of people, it started to accelerate again up to track speed.

After most cloudy skies for the past two hours, it was nice when a little sunshine broke through as a Z-train on Main 1 overtakes UP 4014, stopped on Main 2 for its scheduled stop. The Z-train approached at 40 MPH, offering a lot of "bell and whistle" for all the folks along the right-of-way. Kind of a cool "then-versus-now" shot, yes?

Another example of some steam maintenance taking place during UP 4014's stop at Medicine Bow, WY. Once again, knowing very little about the operation of steam locomotives myself, feel free to comment on exactly what is happening here if you know.

Since the retirement of Steve Lee at the end of 2010, the UP steam program has rested in the hands of this man: Ed Dickens. Dickens led the effort to reacquire and restore UP 4014 over a decade ago now, and he is still the main engineer behind the controls when the Big Boy is out on the rails.

Two members of the Union Pacific steam team work on UP 4014 during a scheduled stop at Medicine Bow, WY. I am by no means a steam expert as I grew up in the diesel era, so I do not know precisely what is being down here. However, the crew has oil (or grease) and a funnel, so I assume they are greasing up some of the components. If you know for sure, please feel free to leave a comment!

The name "Big Boy" was not originally an official designation for the new 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive ALCO produced in 1941. As the history (or lore) goes, a shop worker at ALCO, impressed by the size of the locomotive, wrote "Big Boy" in chalk on the from of the unit. The name then stuck, and was even cast in metal on the smoke box. Today, with the restoration of UP 4014, the steam crew writes "Big Boy" in chalk on the front of the unit, honoring its history. You can clearly see it written here, as UP 4014 sits alongside the intermediate signal at MP 622.9 (on Main 2) on UP's Laramie Subdivision in Medicine Bow.

UP 4014 is stopped across the grade crossing in Medicine Bow for a scheduled stop. Union Pacific had several of their police officers on scene for safety and crowd control, keeping people back from the tracks. Particularly from Main 1, which was still active and trains might pass through by the Big Boy on Main 2.

As it typically the case, UP 4014 attracted a large crowd chasing it. Additionally, a boatload of people showed up at Medicine Bow to watch the train make one of two scheduled stops between Rawlins and Cheyenne. In this shot, you can see several of the people gathered, watching, as the train approaches from the west on Main 2.

The winds were very strong in Wyoming today as UP 4014 and train headed east from Rawlins to Cheyenne. With partly cloudy skies, the wind was blowing the clouds in and out the area very quickly. Here, just as a cloud catches up, UP 4014 and train head east on Main 2.

UP 4014 and train departed Cheyenne westbound in March with UP 1616, UP 1776, and a dozen or passenger cars. However, on the return trip east, a lot of passenger cars were removed, along with UP 1616 and UP 1776 and they were sent to Council Bluffs, IA in preparation of the eastern tour. Covered hoppers were added to the back to help with braking. Here, the train is approaching Arch Road, in Carbon County.

UP 4014 is wrapping up its semiquincentennial cross-country tour. After departing Rawlins, WY about 15 minutes earlier, the train is crossing the North Platte river at Fort Steele on Main 2, making its way east toward its home in Cheyenne.

This particular SD70M, currently in storage in the yard in Laramie, WY, is one of 25 SD70Ms that Southern Pacific received prior to the merger with Union Pacific. In fact, UP 3999 here was the last of the 25 units, SP 9824, delivered in August 1994.

Talk about graffiti! If UP 4357 is put back in to active service (it is currently being stored in Laramie, WY in this shot), I certainly hope that one of the first stops will be at the paint shop.

I'm not sure, but this SD70M might hold the record for the most amount of "tagging" (graffiti) that I've seen applied to a single unit! While it is being stored in Laramie, WY now, I'm guessing it must have spent some time in Southern California or the Houston, TX area.
