There is no diesel helper on this trip as it was allegedly bad ordered in Cheyenne. The train has three passenger cars, five box cars, seven covered hoppers, and a bay side caboose. With the train leaving Cheyenne west on the final day of June, it was time to get some shots. Their pink containers certainly stand out, and it is interesting just seeing the color pink on a train! The headlight of the lead unit is lighting the way as the train is about to emerge from the west portal. Note that you can see the stacks through the Main 2 tunnel. This allows trains that were on the Overland but are headed for Denver, such as this Z-Train, to head straight for Speer for their crew change from Mains 1 and 2. The ZLBDV (Long Beach, CA to Denver, CO). Traditionally, when you think of a Z-train, you probably think of intermodal cars (double stacks and piggy backs). This train does have those, but they are behind the auto racks, out of sight around the corner. The train is on the Borie Cutoff, which is a shortcut from the Overland main to Speer Jct where the Greeley Sub connects in. A new UP engineer just got on board the train and are preparing to depart for the Greeley Sub south to Denver. There is an Amtrak crew on board, but a UP "pilot" engineer is needed to ride with the Amtrak engineers as they are not as familiar with the route.
