With the train leaving Cheyenne west on the final day of June, it was time to get some shots. Their pink containers certainly stand out, and it is interesting just seeing the color pink on a train! The headlight of the lead unit is lighting the way as the train is about to emerge from the west portal. Note that you can see the stacks through the Main 2 tunnel. This allows trains that were on the Overland but are headed for Denver, such as this Z-Train, to head straight for Speer for their crew change from Mains 1 and 2. The ZLBDV (Long Beach, CA to Denver, CO). Traditionally, when you think of a Z-train, you probably think of intermodal cars (double stacks and piggy backs). This train does have those, but they are behind the auto racks, out of sight around the corner. The train is on the Borie Cutoff, which is a shortcut from the Overland main to Speer Jct where the Greeley Sub connects in. A new UP engineer just got on board the train and are preparing to depart for the Greeley Sub south to Denver. There is an Amtrak crew on board, but a UP "pilot" engineer is needed to ride with the Amtrak engineers as they are not as familiar with the route. The Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming due to a wildfire in Colorado that has the tracks closed near Glenwood Springs. The elephant-style intermodal train is a nice change of pace from the type of traffic common to Colorado, which sees far more coal and manifest traffic than intermodal. The Grizzly Creek wildfire in Glenwood Canyon has closed UP's Glenwood Springs Sub and, as a result, the Zephyr is being detoured through Wyoming between Salt Lake City and Denver. Interestingly, this is the same train set that I rode in just six days early on a return trip from Glenwood Springs to Denver. It is a beefy looking unit, with a much larger long hood than an SD70ACe. This is no doubt to accommodate the equipment needed to meet Tier 4 emissions standards. This prime mover is actually a 4-stroke engine as EMD (Caterpillar) was unable to meet Tier 4 standards using a 2-stroke engine. The first train encountered was this eastbound grain train at Borie a few miles west of Cheyenne. It was a good catch though as an SD70ACe-T4 was leading the train on Main 2.
