UP 4014 and train are currently running on the Borie Cutoff, rather than on Mains 1 or 2, which you can see in the distance. This stretch of track is roughly five miles long, and connects Speer Jct (southwest of Cheyenne) with the Overland Route. Trains coming up the Greeley Sub from Denver that are headed west, and have no stop in Cheyenne, will take this track. Same with their eastbound counterparts. Here, the Big Boy will run to Speer Jct and make a reverse move from Speer to the yard at Cheyenne.

While UP's Main 3 (between Speer and Dale Jct) does have four siding on it, it is almost exclusively used by westbounds as it has a lesser grade than the original grade that Mains 1 and 2 follow. Main 3 is several miles longer than Mains 1 and 2, but the lesser grade is worth the added distance. Main 3 was opened in 1953, nearly a century after the original line. Since UP 4014 is currently running eastbound (and down grade), like most other trains, it is on Main 1 this afternoon between Granite and Buford.

I have always been a little bit fascinated by Hermosa Tunnel. It is one of only a handful of tunnels on UP's Overland Route, and certainly the most famous. The double-bore tunnel is just shy of 2,000 feet in length, running through relatively soft dirt near the top of Sherman Hill. I was happy I had the chance to capture UP 4014 and train approaching the west portal of the tunnel on Main 1, on its return journey to home (Cheyenne).

UP 4014 rounds the bend from Tie Siding on Main 1, leading into the cut on the west side of Hermosa Tunnel. For whatever reason, UP typically runs trains on the left train between Tie Siding at Cheyenne. The tracks are, of course, CTC. So the dispatcher can run trains either direction on either main at his or her discretion. However, that discretion is generally the lefthand main.

Under partly cloudy skies, UP 4014 is starting to pull east on Main 2 at Medicine Bow, WY. To give you an idea of just how much the wind is blowing today, take a look at the smoke coming out of the stack of UP 4014! It is blowing ahead of the train. A lot of steam and water droplets were spraying out of the Big Boy as it started pulling, and two small water droplets landed on the lens of my camera, center frame, covering a bit of the Big Boy.
