This westbound manifest beat the passenger special to Dale Jct, and the dispatcher elected to keep the manifest rolling. The train is approaching the east portal of Hermosa Tunnel on Main 2. The flag that UP added to the long hood, when not properly maintained, can get pretty ragged. In the case of this SD70ACe, it has been largely burned off the long hood. At least, until this morning! An eastbound UP intermodal, with four units on the point, emerges from the tunnel on Main 1. The lead unit is a Tier-4 ET44AC. As you can see, Hermosa Tunnel is a very high tunnel. But when the Overland was built, by far the best solution to what is effectively a deep dirt pile here was to dig to tunnels, both 1,800 feet long, through the dirt. You can see a pair of mid-train DPUs in the distance on the S-Curve on Main 3. For those unfamiliar, Union Pacific has two different grades between Cheyenne and Dale Jct (near Hermosa Tunnel).
