The scenery and the speed of Amtrak will be changing soon! Amtrak is quickly approaching Helper, the transition point between the mountain scenery of Soldier Summit (and 30-40 MPH speeds) and the Utah desert (with 60-80 MPH speeds)!

Heading east on Main Two, Amtrak 6 passes some wonderful fall colors just east of the Kyune tunnels on its way down off of Soldier Summit.

Amtrak 6 is running about four hours late, which allows this shot to be possible! At this time of year, if Amtrak was running on time, it would be pitch black when Amtrak came through Summit.

Soaked among the colors of fall (and a bit of gray for the fill!), Amtrak 6 makes its way swiftly up the grade from Gilluly headed straight for Soldier Summit.

A westbound BNSF manifest is running the "wrong way" on Main Two on its way west down the west side of Soldier Summit. The train passed a Utah Railway coal load at the top of Soldier Summit. The coal load was on Main One.

Having now conquered the worst of the grade on the east slope of Soldier Summit, this coal train will soon cross underneath US-6 (to the geographic west side) and arrive at Colton.

Chances are that DRGW 5371 is about six weeks away from a Triennial inspection at the time of this photo. Unfortunately, triennial inspections cannot be accomplished in Helper or Roper. Therefore, it is likely that the unit will be patched in mid-November 2006.

About two dozen new IPPX hoppers clearly stand out against the "classic" two-tone IPPX hoppers in the rest of this loaded Utah Railway coal train. I found it interesting that Main One in CWR here, while Main Two (on the right side) is jointed rail.
