A long covered hopper train approaches the (now closed) Pershing Blvd bridge with a C44ACM, SD70ACe, and ET44C4 on the point. UP 6160 was originally SP 167. It has undergone several upgrades since its time as an SP unit. It is now capable of being a DPU unit. Originally, SP 100-199 did not have DPU equipment installed.

UP 6160 leads a westbound covered hopper train on Main 1 toward Archer Curve just east of Cheyenne. If you blasted off that yellow paint on UP 6160, you'd end up finding some scarlet and gray! UP 6160 started life as SP 167.

After a full day of chasing UP's hospital train east, I caught this eastbound autorack train in the final few minutes of sunlight just east of Pine Bluffs. Quite a nice ending to a very nice day.

A final look at the old CNW F7A #401 as it rolls east on the hospital train toward its new home in Silvas, IL.

As the sun got closer and closer to the western horizon, the crowd following UP's hospital train definitely thinned out a bit. Here, you can see about ten or so cars stopped on the shoulders of the Lincoln Highway, parallel to a stopped UP 5716 and train. They got stopped at a red signal, but are just about to get a clear (green) signal to continue east. This would be as far east as I was able to chase the train.

The UP hospital train has come to (yet another) stop due to a red signal ahead. The dispatcher informed the train that they'd be stopped temporarily to allow an eastbound to run around on Main 1.

This was an incredibly lucky catch for the day! A decade ago, patched Espee AC4400CWs were still fairly common. However, over the years, UP has managed to repaint all but three of these units in to full UP yellow. I just happened to coincidentally come across this scarlet and gray unit, serving as a mid-train DPU on an eastbound grain train. This unit was originally SP 264.

After several hours of being stuck behind a UP hospital train, which is restricted to 20 MPH, the Sidney Sub dispatcher was finally able to cross this grain train over to Main 1.

Interestingly, this hospital train is configured with a manned mid-train helper, UP 8198. The crew on the unit was in constant contact with the crew at the end end. The equipment being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum is all head of UP 8198. The train also had some gondolas and center beam flats in tow, for what purpose, I am not sure.

Seeing as how this is likely the last opportunity to get shots of UP 3985 on UP rails, here is one more roster shot of the Challenger in the light of setting Veteran's Day sun.

Cannot get enough of the fantastic low light offered up by the rapidly sinking November sun. The lighting on the side of UP 5716, UP 3985, and UP 5511 is wonderful.

With the slow progress of the hospital train, making it only 45 miles or so over the course of six hours, eastbound traffic started to backup behind it! In the distance, just one block back, you can see the headlights from an eastbound grain train which has finally managed to cross over to Main 1 and will overtake the hospital train.

The light is starting to get low in the western sky as the hospital train makes its way out of Wyoming and in to Nebraska. I overheard the crew on the train mentioned that this is the first time in at least 70 years at UP 5511 has been in Nebraska!

After making a stop on the western edge of Pine Bluffs, WY to check the equipment...and check on reports of a "green jacket" spotted in a coupler...the train continues to roll east through Pine Bluffs. The "green jacket" turned out to be some yellow tape that was part of the operation. The sun is starting to get low as the hospital train rolls past a small elevator.

UP 6936 looks a bit odd, sandwiched in between two passenger cars. However, in this case, it is not particularly relevant as the unit is merely a fellow passenger on this eastbound hospital train passing by rocks near Burns, WY on the Sidney Sub.
