I consider myself quite privileged that I had the opportunity - on more than one occasion - to witness UP 6936 operating on special trains on the UP. This even includes a couple occasions I saw it run on the Moffat. While I am glad that it is going to be maintained at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL, I am sad that it will no longer roam free on throughout UP's system.

UPB 966 has seen better days! This is an E9B that was originally UP, then sold to Amtrak when Amtrak was first formed. Once Amtrak received newer equipment, it was sold back to UP where it was stored at the roundhouse in Cheyenne and used for parts for the operable E9s UP still has on the heritage fleet. It appears that no more cannibalism is possible as it is being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 6936 is one of 47 DDA40X produced between 1969 and 1971 by EMD. It is the largest diesel locomotive ever built, weighing in at roughly 270 tons. It has four axles on each of its two trucks and has two prime movers. Alas, after just over 50 years of UP ownership, it is now being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 5511 is the only-remaining 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type steam engine in existence. It has sat at UP's roundhouse in Cheyenne for decades, but UP never ended up investing in a restoration project for it. Now, it is headed east to be donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL. The museum says they eventually plan to restore it to operational condition.

A 3/4 roster shot look at UP 3985. It last ran in September 2010 when it actually led the (now defunct) Circus Train down the Greeley Sub to Denver from Cheyenne. Since then...and in particular since UP sunk its efforts in to restoring UP 4014...the old gal has sat in Cheyenne. Now, it is off to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum as part of a donation from UP.

One of my absolute favorite (more modern) engines is the SD70M Phase 2. The Phase 2 is my favorite in particular because the radiator intakes are angled out slightly. Not as much as an SD45, but more than an SD70M Phase 1. In addition, the teardrop windshield is in place and the original EMD wide cab looks great before the new nose introduced in the Phase 3 (and subsequently on SD70ACes).

With the current decline in the economy, Class 1 railroads are in need of less power and, to help reduce fuel and maintenance costs, many units have been placed in storage. Such is the case of Union Pacific as a string of 40 to 50 SD70Ms are currently being stored in the small yard in Sidney, NE along the Overland.
