Final shot from the day of UP 4014, now stopped in the yard in Sidney, NE, where it will "sleep" for the night. The tanker truck is filled with water and will fill the Big Boy's "water bottle" back up for the next leg of the trip to North Platte, NE tomorrow. Ultimately, the train will move from Union Pacific to Norfolk Southern in Chicago, running on NS tracks (in anticipation of the proposed merger between UP and NS) to Philadelphia. The steam train returns to Cheyenne at the end of July.

UP 4014 is letting off a bit of smoke as it has come to a stop in the yard at Sidney, NE. UP actually does run a local out of a Sidney, and keeps a handful of units in town for that local. UP 4014 has completed the first 100 miles of its journey from Cheyenne to Philadelphia. It will be in Philadelphia on July 4th to celebrate the Semiquincentennial.

UP 4014 is creeping along at about 10 MPH as it is preparing to come to a stop for the first night of many to come on this incredible journey to Philadelphia and back.

UP 4014 has left Main 2 behind and is now on one of the yard tracks here in the small yard at Sidney, NE. The signals on the bridge, from left to right, are for Main 2, Main 1, and the 11,000-foot siding at Sidney. No signal head for Big Boy as the train is out of CTC and now in yard limits.

A lot of folks really enjoy pacing the Big Boy as it is moving along at track speed! You can see the line of cars here on US-30 that are doing precisely that, taking in the sights and sounds of the train as it heads east.

Looks east from Point of Rocks, the red, white, and blue boxcars really make a strong statement on the semiquincentennial train led by the Big Boy.

One of my personal favorite shots of the day came at the location known as Point of Rocks just east of Potter, NE. Nebraska is, of course, a relatively flat state, and Point of Rocks is one of the places that has a few significant hills (with a lot of rocks!). Partly cloudy skies help create a bit of a dramatic scene here along US-30.

Working to outrun the clouds drifting across the sky, UP 4014 makes its way through an S-curve at the location know as "Point of Rocks". One of the more interesting terrain features in the relatively flat terrain of Nebraska.

UP 4014 never fails to attract a huge crowd. Not only those who might characterize themselves as railfans, but even the general public that find steam cool will often make their way trackside. This afternoon, the parade of cars paralleling the train on US-30 is long as the train continues east.

Under partly cloudy skies, UP 4014 follows along US-30 in western Nebraska between Bushnell and Kimball. It was pretty great watching the train move east with the Big Boy as the only power on the train!

I do not claim to know much about how steam locomotives work, but when UP 4014 starts pulling, it frequently lets a little steam free from the pistons, making for a cool scene. such is the case here at Pine Bluffs, WY as the train starts up to continue east.

After close to a 90 minute stop on Main 2 in Pine Bluffs, WY, UP 4014 and train are steaming up and starting to roll, ready to continue the first leg of the journey east to the small yard in Sidney, NE.

About 15 minutes prior to departing Pine Bluffs, the steam team standby as a westbound UP train rolls by at 30 MPH on Main 1.

Not too long prior to departure from Pine Bluffs, the steam team has replaced the Wyoming flag with the Nebraska flag on the front of Big Boy. This is one of the super classy things UP does, flying the flag of whatever state the Big Boy is (primarily) running in after a stop. Pine Bluffs, WY sits on the border with Nebraska, so in less than a mile, the train will be in Nebraska.

The UP steam team works to replace a pipe that connects to the main air reservoir after replacing a gasket that blew. Once the pipe is reinstalled, a few more standard maintenance tasks will take place prior to departing eastbound.
