UP 6936 is one of 47 DDA40X produced between 1969 and 1971 by EMD. It is the largest diesel locomotive ever built, weighing in at roughly 270 tons. It has four axles on each of its two trucks and has two prime movers. Alas, after just over 50 years of UP ownership, it is now being donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL.

UP 5511 is the only-remaining 2-10-2 "Santa Fe" type steam engine in existence. It has sat at UP's roundhouse in Cheyenne for decades, but UP never ended up investing in a restoration project for it. Now, it is headed east to be donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum in Silvas, IL. The museum says they eventually plan to restore it to operational condition.

A 3/4 roster shot look at UP 3985. It last ran in September 2010 when it actually led the (now defunct) Circus Train down the Greeley Sub to Denver from Cheyenne. Since then...and in particular since UP sunk its efforts in to restoring UP 4014...the old gal has sat in Cheyenne. Now, it is off to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum as part of a donation from UP.

UP 5716 leads UP 3985, UP 5511, and (hospital) train east through Archer Curve on the journey east. Most likely the very last time that either of these steam engines will traverse these rails. Neither steam engine, as is pretty obvious, was under steam here.

A trio of elephant-style GEs leads a westbound manifest toward on Main 1 from Archer toward Archer Curve on a beautiful Veteran's Day. It is a bit chilly at 33°F (1°C) and sustained winds of about 15 MPH (24 KPH).

One of my absolute favorite (more modern) engines is the SD70M Phase 2. The Phase 2 is my favorite in particular because the radiator intakes are angled out slightly. Not as much as an SD45, but more than an SD70M Phase 1. In addition, the teardrop windshield is in place and the original EMD wide cab looks great before the new nose introduced in the Phase 3 (and subsequently on SD70ACes).

With the current decline in the economy, Class 1 railroads are in need of less power and, to help reduce fuel and maintenance costs, many units have been placed in storage. Such is the case of Union Pacific as a string of 40 to 50 SD70Ms are currently being stored in the small yard in Sidney, NE along the Overland.

Archer Curve is a fantastic spot for checking out both eastbounds and westbounds with decent light for most of the day. In this shot, an eastbound manifest (with an interesting single DPU cut into the middle of the train) climbs the grade on Main 2.

Even though it is only shortly after 2pm, it feels much later as the sun is already getting low in the western November sky. The winter season is a time for short days and rich light!

After spending some time switching in the yard at Cheyenne, this eastbound is now on the move on Main 2 at Archer Curve. The train is sporting an all-EMD (all-SD70) consist on the head end.

A look straight on at the nose of UP 1943. The "Air Force Silver" looks mighty fine! It has been suggested that UP get the George Bush 41 unit (UP 4141) out of storage in Little Rock, AR and run the two units together.

When work was last done on the US-87 overpass in Cheyenne, a tightly-weaved (if that's the appropriate term!), 10 foot tall chain link fence was put up on the sides of the overpass, making shooting from the overpass somewhat tricky. In this shot, you can see UP 1943 sitting on main 1 through one of the holes in the fence alongside the Cheyenne Depot.

UP's dispatcher was probably glad when the public viewing of UP 1943 was completed. The unit sat on Main 1, taking up a few miles of track through Cheyenne. This left the dispatcher Mains 2-4 for through trains and crew changes.

A westbound manifest throttles up after receiving a fresh crew in Cheyenne. The next crew will take the train to Green River, WY. Meanwhile, UP 1943 sits on public display on Main 1 at the Cheyenne Depot.

UP 1943 sits on Main 1 at the Cheyenne Depot for public viewing. Cheyenne is a crew change point for UP, and as such there are four main tracks next to the depot. As such, the public was not allowed on the station platform. A westbound manifest just had a crew change and is now pulling westbound on Main 2.
