Amtrak's "Pointless Arrow"...the first scheme that Amtrak ever had...looks pretty good as it dashes through the snow on the point of the Winter Park Express.

I'm going to guess that passenger on board the Winter Park Express are very happy to be there. Warm, dry, and not behind the wheel, on the way to slopes. The train is approaching a clear intermediate at Kipling Street.

Finally! A real blizzard hit the Denver Metro area...just in time for the westbound Winter Park Express. Here, AMTK 156 (the Phase 1 "Bloody Nose" Heritage Unit) charges through the snow on the approach to Kipling Street.

I love this telephoto shot at Crescent, clearly showing the jointed rail on the siding and the welded rail on the main. If you are new to trains, jointed rail (sometimes referred to as "stick track") consists of relatively short sections of rail that are attached at either end to form a joint. Welded rail (which most mainline is these days) consists of rail that has been welded together in 1/4 mile long stretches. It still has joints at the ends of the 1/4 lengths of track, but the joints are, obviously, less common. The Winter Park Express "Ski Train" is making its way west on the main. The brightly colored bag covering the coupler will keep snow out of the coupler, making it much easier for the crew to run around the train at Fraser.

The suburb of Arvada has expanded to the north and west quite a bit in the last five years. The new neighborhood of Candelas is the main neighborhood seen here in the background of the Winter Park Express heading west through Rocky.

The morning sun glistens of the sides of the eight Superliners devoted to the Winter Park Express "Ski Train" for the 2018 ski season. The track above the train is the Rocky Spur, which now services a single customer at the far north end almost five miles away.

Highball Rocky! The westbound Winter Park Express approaches a clear signal at the east end of Rocky after making its way through Barbara's Gulch and passes underneath the CO-93 overpass.

The eastbound Ski Train just peaks around the curve near the west end of Tolland. The train had to wait in the siding at Winter Park for the eastbound Zephyr to pass by. Consequently, the train is now running about 30 minutes behind schedule.

Due to the fact that the power for the Ski Train must run around the train at Fraser, the "Bloody Nose" Heritage Unit only leads the train twice each weekend (once west and once east). For January, it will lead east on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings. Here, it has the train rolling along on the approach to 66th Avenue in Arvada on a Sunday morning.

On a pleasant January morning, AMTK 193 and AMTK 156 are in charge of the second run of the Winter Park Express as it heads west at Crescent. I've wanted to try this angle for awhile and, other than a couple of annoying power lines that splice through the scene, it isn't all too bad.
