A last look for me at the HPASSAG as it is approaching Utah Junction in Denver. The train is about to pass underneath the relative new Belt-Bypass, built by UP a few years earlier. The two Alaska Railroad GP49's on the train are running dead, headed for their new home in Houston, TX working for Specialized Rail Transport.

When EMD was working on their 50-series locomotives in the late 1970's and early 1980's, they had four models they offered. The GP49, the SD49, the GP50 and the SD50. The 49's were only 12-cylinder models and were rated at 2,800 HP. Alaska Railroad purchased nine GP49's (the only nine units to ever be produced), and EMD never did end up producing any SD49's. Here is one of the nine GP49's running DIC (Dead-In-Consist) on BNSF's HPASSAG. The unit was retired in 2006 and is now headed for Houston, TX.

The southbound HPASSAG passes by Church Ranch Lake on a beautiful (albeit cold) morning. In tow are two DIC (Dead-In-Consist) Alaska Railroad GP49's. The units were built in May 1985 and were retired by Alaska in 2006. Now, they are headed for a very different climate in Houston, TX. There, they will work for Specialized Rail Transport.

This is one of only nine GP49's ever produced by EMD. It is very similar to a GP50, although it only has 12 cylinders and is rated at 2,800 HP. This unit hasn't been in the continental United States since May 1985 when it was delivered to the Alaska Railroad. The unit was retired in 2006 and is now headed to Texas for its "next life". This is also the very first picture I've ever taken of an Alaska Railroad unit!
