As an afternoon storm moves in over the Rockies, the eastbound Zephyr approaches a clear signal at the west switch of Leyden. Ten years ago, there’d be hardly any structures at all in this shot. Arvada annexed the land west of Leyden (on the south side of the tracks) and a new neighborhood - Leyden Rock - is now nearly complete.

While the SD40-2 defines the best unit ever built by any locomotive manufacturer - it was in EMD's catalog from 1972 until 1989 - even they are starting to become harder to find. Fortunately, UP recently approved a program to rebuild 500 SD40-2s, giving them an extended life. Here, UP 3211 serves on the Fort Collins local.

On a crystal clear June afternoon, UP's Fort Collins local sits on the Fort Collins Sub along Riverside Avenue. The train has completed its switching and is waiting to receive a warrant from the dispatcher to make the 30 mile journey back to La Salle, CO.

A last look for me at the HPASSAG as it is approaching Utah Junction in Denver. The train is about to pass underneath the relative new Belt-Bypass, built by UP a few years earlier. The two Alaska Railroad GP49's on the train are running dead, headed for their new home in Houston, TX working for Specialized Rail Transport.

The southbound HPASSAG had a sole DPU C44-9W bringing up its tail end. The train is just about off the main line at Rennicks...note the train running underneath UP's Belt Flyover.

Not many people have seen the Ft Collins local and as a bonus, the day I chased it, it had three unpatched GP40's. The second GP40 was DRGW 3126. The train is crossing over the Poudre River.
