These signals are two of the last holdouts of classic Rio Grande signals on the Moffat. The only other location between Denver and the Moffat where you can find these target signals is at Utah Junction and east Leyden. Unfortunately, these are going to be coming down very soon. A few dozen feet west of this shot (behind me), a new signal mast has been erected.

Lucas-

Yes, I have no doubt these old signals are getting hard to read. The one on the main at east Leyden (for eastbounds) looks really bad from 82nd Avenue. I frankly can't believe they haven't replaced those yet. Regardless, from a railfan standpoint it's a bummer to see them go. At the same time, it's good to see UP investing in the line.

I've heard rumors of a second main track being added from C&S to Leyden for years. To be honest, it's one of those things now of "I'll believe it when I see it". I don't really see what that kind of investment would do for UP at the moment. I've also heard rumors of Tolland and East Portal being connected as well as a second main being added from Tabernash to Winter Park. I'm not holding my breath that any of them will be happening anytime soon.
