Prior to the construction of I-70, CO-36 was the main route east of Denver out on to the plains. A westbound oil train moves up and down with the plains landscape parallel to US-36 a few miles west of Bennett, CO.

Technically, this section is Colorado 36, not US 36, but it is the historic alignment of US 36/40/287 before the freeway was built.
