Remember the horsepower race at the end of the 1990s? Railroads wanted more horsepower and EMD produced its SD90MAC and GE produced its AC6000CW, each with 6000 HP. But neither were quite ready for primetime, so EMD made over 300 SD9043MACs and GE made its AC6044CWs. They had 4400 HP, but were designed to have the prime mover swapped out for the 6000 HP counterparts when ready. The only problem was they never really were ready! Here, an AC6044CW heads east at Rocky, clearly defined by its large radiator blister at the back end.
