UP 5391, heading west across the Belt Industrial Lead, is passing by the Cherokee Power Station, one of the largest power plants in the Denver area. In 2011 and 2012, two coal-fired units were retired. In 2015, a new natural-gas combined-cycle plant entered into service. In 2017, the last coal unit was converted to natural gas. For decades, Rio Grande (and later Southern Pacific and then Union Pacific) delivered coal to the power plant. Those days are now nearly a decade in the past.
