Just south of MP 32 and the Foothills underpass, this Loram rail grinder is slowly working its way north on the Front Range Sub. On this particular trip, only the rails on curves were being ground. The grinder was skipping right over the straight stretches.

In between switches on the main in Boulder, this Loram rail grinder is making its way north. The worker at the end of the train watches for any fires that might accidentally be started as a result of grinding and extinguishes them with one of the water canons on board. The cars on the siding have no power and will be picked up later in the day by the southbound HLAUDEN.

It's been quite awhile since I've seen two B-units working on a coal train! And I don't know that I've every (personally) seen two B40-8W's working together on the Front Range Sub before. There are only 81 such units on BNSF's roster (at the time of the photo) and these two looked good together.

Valmont Power Plant in Boulder receives its coal from a joint effort between UP and BNSF. UP hauls the coal from the mines in the Colorado high country down to Denver, where the train is turned over to BNSF. BNSF takes the train to Boulder via the Front Range Sub and delivers the loaded hoppers to the power plant. On this particular afternoon, two B40-8W's switch some cars around at the plant.

On my way into work, I was surprised to find this Laurel to Denver manifest tied down in the siding at Boulder. Typically, the train is too long to fit at Boulder. First up was a BNSF C44-9CW, then an Oakway SD60, and finally a Ferromex ES44DC.

Descending down from Burke Hill, the HDENLAU is less than two miles away from the Valmont Power Plant in Boulder. Note that the third unit in the lineup is MRL F45XR #392!

This SD75M, still painted up in Warbonnet, was definitely worth a roster shot! The unit was second of two units powering the Cheyenne Local. This unit is still in excellent condition!

The Cheyenne Local, which runs between Cheyenne, WY and Denver, CO on the Front Range Sub, was tied down in the siding at Boulder on March 10. It was a cold and snowy day in Colorado. The lead unit was a patch Santa Fe SD40-2 and the second unit was a very nice SD75M painted in Warbonnet!

A southbound Military Train parallels the Diagonal just north of Boulder ten minutes prior to sunset. The military train was carrying support vehicles (trucks and hummers). With the two green and white SD40-2's for power, this looks like it could have been taken 10 or even 20 years ago!

Just a few weeks old, KCS 4009 is heading south on the STCPDEN-01A. Kansas City Southern purchased 30 SD70ACe's (4000-4029) for delivery in early 2006. Just about half of the order had been filled when this pictures was taken!

Making its way south, the STCPDEN-01A passes Valmont Resevoir with a warrant from MP 33 to MP 18. The second and third units are from the two best-selling series EMD has ever produced (albeit there is a 30 year gap between the 70-series and 40-series). The units are KCS 4009 (an SD70ACe) and BNSF 7920 (an SD40-2).

In a semi-rare move, BNSF sent the STCPDEN-01A down the Front Range Sub without an orange paint scheme in sight! In fact, the power was extremely unique, with a BNSF warbonnet leading, followed by brand new KCS SD70ACe (#4009) and the BNSF 7920. The train is on the approach to Boulder here, about a half mile north of the Foothills Parkway overpass.

The Cheyenne Local makes its way north through Boulder, a former Santa Fe B40-8W on the point. The Flat Irons can be clearly seen in the background, as the train approaches the Foothills Parkway underpass.

BNSF 6948 heads up a single car Boeing train north on the Front Range Sub. This sole SD40-2 took the car all the way from Denver to Cheyenne. Must have been (relatively) easy on the crew!

Of course the sun was still high enough to create a nice line through this former Rio Grande SD40T-2. That's okay though, because when it comes to these units, you have to take what you can get!
