The train has a track warrant that will take it all the way back to Denver. A northbound BNSF Denver-Laurel manifest is in the siding at Broomfield, waiting for the special to arrive before continuing north. The move is part of some early steps to try to bring Amtrak intercity trains along the Front Range in Colorado. There are two bridges that cross Arapahoe Road here, due to a widening of the road several years ago. The train is configured 1x1, meaning there is a single unit on the head end and, as seen here, a single DPU bringing up the rear of the train. As the work day comes to an end, traffic on the Diagonal Highway is starting to pick up. This highway connects the cities of Boulder and Longmont and sees a lot of traffic over the course of a day. The large "D" sign to the right indicates that the derail is set on the Boulder siding. If you've followed my site for awhile, you know that I used to work in Boulder and would often get shots around the area. This stretch of track had a lot of damage, a large portions of the ballast and ground beneath were washed away, during the flooding in September 2013. The siding isn't long enough to accommodate the entire train. The remainder of the train is down on the storage track at Stazio. The coal train is empty and will be ready to head south toward Denver later in the day. For the time being, it is tied down in the siding with no crew on board. In fact, turning in either direction would reveal office buildings as we are right in the middle of Boulder! This northbound double stack is approaching the south end of the Boulder siding. Not too often on the Front Range Sub that you can get a shot of two coal trains meeting each other!
