The second unit is BNSF 638, a former ATSF Warbonnet and one of the few such Warbonnets that was repainted in the Heritage 2 scheme! And I don't know that I've every (personally) seen two B40-8W's working together on the Front Range Sub before. UP hauls the coal from the mines in the Colorado high country down to Denver, where the train is turned over to BNSF. BNSF takes the train to Boulder via the Front Range Sub and delivers the loaded hoppers to the power plant. On this particular afternoon, two B40-8W's switch some cars around at the plant. Kansas City Southern purchased 30 SD70ACe's (4000-4029) for delivery in early 2006. Just about half of the order had been filled when this pictures was taken! The second and third units are from the two best-selling series EMD has ever produced (albeit there is a 30 year gap between the 70-series and 40-series). The train has three classic EMD's (all rated as SD40-2s) and they sounded (and looked) great the 6600 foot long double stack train. The coal comes from Union Pacific's North Fork Branch near Grand Junction. Once in Denver, two UP units are left on the train and a BNSF SD70MAC is added.
