Just below Cliff, an eastbound UP oil train follows South Boulder Creek as it enters in to the upper end of the Tunnel District. Steep canyon walls and sharp drop-offs are ahead. Clouds are moving in this afternoon, so lighting is starting to get a little sketchy.

After developing some air issues that caused the train to go into emergency in the Moffat Tunnel, BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifest tied down in the siding at Cliff as the crew was getting short on time. Meanwhile, an eastbound UP manifest overtakes the manifest on the main. Note the two smiley faces drawn into the dirt on the nose of UP 6570.

Like so many other towns along the rails in Colorado and throughout the United States, the small town of Pinecliffe, CO exists because of the tracks. Indeed, Pinecliffe had its own depot and the Yampa Valley Mail stopped there daily until May 1968. Now, it is just a brief blur out the window for these passengers on the eastbound California Zephyr. The town itself has a whooping population of 23.

This evening's eastbound Zephyr rolls along South Boulder Creek on the main at Cliff. CO-72 is on the far side of the tracks, going over the hill that the train can bypass. The third track in the scene, furthest from the Zephyr, is the house track at Cliff.

The westbound Zephyr is in the Upper Tunnel District, currently between Tunnel 19 and Tunnel 20, climbing west toward the peak of the climb at the Moffat Tunnel, another (roughly) 17 miles to the west.

Some clouds have moved in and are casting shadows in the area just west of Crescent as the Zephyr heads toward the east portal of Tunnel 19. Note the dam for Gross Reservoir in the distance, a primary supply of water for Denver and some of the surrounding areas.

AMTK 155 leads the morning westbound Zephyr through a cut just west of Crescent. The train will follow the tracks through the curve in the foreground which lead in to the east portal of Tunnel 19. The train is almost 32 miles west of Denver Union Station here.

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear (green) signal at the west end of Crescent. The train is approaching one of the many cuts in the Tunnel District. Note the slide fences lining the tracks on both sides.

While there is no train in the shot, I thought I'd include this shot of Gross Reservoir to show the progress being made on the raising of the reservoir. The height of the dam is increasing by 131 feet, which will increase the capacity roughly three times over! The project still has a couple years remaining.

An eastbound UP coal load...pretty rare on the Moffat in 2024...is just starting its journey east through the Tunnel District. About two cars of the train are in the shortest tunnel in the district, Tunnel 29 (78 feet). Note South Boulder Creek to the right, which will quickly decrease in elevation. Faster than the tracks, to be sure.

A pair of AC4400CWs lead an eastbound coal load across the bridge over South Boulder Creek just west of Tunnel 29. The train just departed Cliff on a green signal and will have greens the rest of the way in to Denver. In the distance, there is still a lot of snow covering the Continental Divide.

The westbound California Zephyr passes through a true winter scene, with evergreens white instead of green, in between Tunnels 7 and 8 in the Tunnel District of the Moffat Tunnel Sub. Since Tunnel 1, the train has been running (roughly) geographically north, but after emerging from Tunnel 8, the train will be headed geographically west, following along South Boulder Canyon near Elderado Springs.

An ES44AC and two SD70ACes bring up the tail end of a westbound coal empty at Crescent. Due to the thick fog and crazy winter weather (near the end of April), the train will quickly disappear in to the mist as it continues its journey west.

This westbound coal empty consists of bathtub gondolas with rotary couplers. All of the gons are either BNSF or BN. What is particularly interesting is that the symbol for the train suggests that it is in fact a UP train. Despite having all BNSF power and BN/BNSF gondolas...
