BNSF 9301 leads the westbound Denver-Provo manifest at the west switch of Cliff. In the Rio Grande days, the west switch of Cliff was interesting as it was a "Y" switch. There was a bit of a diverging both for the main and the siding. UP has reconfigured it so the only turn is toward the siding.

It is a fantastic, wintery scene at the west end of Cliff as the Winter Park Express charges west. Passenger on board are looking forward to day on the slopes at Winter Park, just another 20 (rail) miles ahead.

AMTK 171 leads the Winter Park Express west toward a clear (green) signal at the west end of Cliff. This section of track frequently goes weeks or even months with snow in the winter as it is on the north side of the mountain. There is never direct sunlight here in the winter.

An loaded oil train rolls east on the main track at Cliff, about 12 miles east of the Moffat Tunnel. The snow covered peak in the distance is James Peak. This peak is 13,294 feet above sea level, and the Moffat Tunnel runs nearly underneath the mountain.

Prior to the days of PTC, signals that were approach lit would remain dark (shut off) until there was a train in the block approaching the signal. However, with the advent of PTC, signals will now light up just as soon as the dispatcher aligns a route through them. Such is the case at West Cliff (CP DS038) as we see a clear (green over red) signal set up for the eastbound Zephyr, still 90 minutes away.

Additionally, take note of the switch here at West Cliff. For a long time, this switch was set up as a "Y", meaning both the main and the siding slightly curved away from the single main track. However, UP has reconfigured the switch so the main is straight through the entire switch.

UP 1943 leads a UP Officer's Special train west at the west switch of Cliff along South Boulder Creek. The train was given top priority and ran from Denver to Grand Junction. It was apparently a marketing and sales meeting that included some UP customers. It was also rumored that UP CEO Lance Fritz himself was on the train.

A single AC4400CW brings up the tail end of this North Fork Branch-bound coal empty. The train has six units (configured 5x(0)x1). It is a chilly morning along a frozen-over South Boulder Creek!

A westbound coal empty knocks down an Advanced Approach (flashing yellow) signal at the west end of Cliff. This empty took the siding at Rocky where the Winter Park Express Ski Train overtook it. It will next take the siding at Rollins to allow the California Zephyr to pass it as well.

Even though lighting is frequently less than ideal, I like the shot at the west end of Cliff. The tracks run parallel to South Boulder Creek and trains, leaving the Tunnel District behind, can pick up a little speed. In this shot, the MNYRO has a great variety of power, all elephant-style, headed west.

It is becoming harder to get shots from the west end of Cliff that include an unobstructed view of the tracks and the signal. I like including the signal as these signals and the signals at east Leyden are the only ones on the Moffat (east of the Moffat Tunnel) that have not yet been replaced. Here, the MNYRO knocks down a clear signal at the west end as it makes its way west.

The westbound Zephyr is doing its best to make up for lost time as it hustles past the west switch of Cliff. Due to extreme weather conditions throughout the midwest, the Zephyr is running 4 1/2 hours late today.

West Cliff is one of three locations on the Moffat (east of the tunnel) where UP has not yet replaced the signals. You can see the classic target signal standing along the main on the right side of this shot. Meanwhile, a colorful Denver-Provo manifest sits in the siding to allow the westbound Zephyr to pass.

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Amtrak, four P42DC's were painted in heritage schemes. Each scheme was inspired by a scheme previously used by Amtrak. The first of the four units to visit Colorado on the Zephyr was AMTK 156, wearing a Phase I inspired scheme with a Bloody Nose at a Pointless Arrow. I missed its trip west, but caught it coming back east. Here it is at the west switch of Cliff, looking dang good in my opinion.

Hello C44AC-CTE! I personally am very glad that UP started putting the wings on the nose of their units again. The nose is just too darn plain and boring otherwise...
