An almost three hour late Zephyr knocks down a green signal at East Irondale, the Denver skyline visible in the distance. I'm not sure why two extra sightseer lounge cars were on the train this morning, but it made for a bit of a unique shot.

A rather unusual consist on the Zephyr this morning as a quartet of P42DCs lead the train. The train also has an extra sleeper, and two additional sightseer lounge cars on the tail end. The train is approaching the east switch of Irondale, running just under three hours late.

I really like the fact that BNSF still has a significant number of units still wearing original Santa Fe or Burlington Northern paint schemes (save for the patching). BNSF 1656 is still wearing cascade green and has its nose stripes as it leads an eastbound local between Fox and Sand Creek.

A pair of SD40-2s lead a local coming out of BNSF's 31st Street Yard. The train is crossing over the Denver and Rock Island.

A 14-hour late eastbound Zephyr crosses the diamond at Sand Creek. The train is passing underneath I-270 after just by the Suncor Oil Refinery. Not too often that the Zephyr is headed east through here at this time of the day.

A westbound empty oil train is rolling by the Suncor oil refinery along the Brush Sub. In the foreground, an RTD N-Line commuter train crosses over a bridge that is several miles long on its way north toward the Denver suburb of Thornton.

Right at sunrise, as the sun crests the horizon to the east, a westbound (soon to be southbound) coal load rolls by the massive grain elevators just east of the diamond at Sand Creek.

At Sand Creek Junction, the inbound and outbound tracks converge down to a single track that makes up the Greeley Sub mainline northbound. UP's MNYGR is entering the single track as it passes through the Suncor refinery.

UP's steam train excursion proceeds north on the Greeley Sub toward Cheyenne to the left, while the California Zephyr prepares to continue to Denver on BNSF's Brush Sub, coming from Chicago, to the right.

UP 4014 crosses over Sand Creek at Sand Creek Junction, the train just coming off of the Inbound track to proceed north to Cheyenne. This is a very popular spot for shooting the steam train when it runs as, in the summer time, the three quarter lighting is about as perfect as it can get in the mornings.

In fantastic early morning light, UP 4014 and train pass through the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City, the Denver skyline standing tall in the distance. Indeed, the train is drawing the attention of some Suncor employees. And the with the type of show UP puts on, who could blame them!?
