In the setting sunlight, the westbound Zephyr kicks up a bunch of exhaust as it accelerates to get up to track speed. The exhaust blows across the code line...no longer used, but not yet taken down.

The Rocky Mountaineer has slowed to about 20 MPH as it enters the siding at Fruita. There is a BNSF oil train tied down on the main track, necessitating all trains coming through to run through the siding.

One of the challenges when chasing a northbound train is the lighting. More often than not, the train is going to be backlit. However, just west of Terry Ranch Road, the tracks are heading northwest, offering some nice afternoon light on the side of UP 4014 and train as they near the end of the Greeley Subdivision.

One of the more popular spots for a shot of UP 4014 between Denver and Cheyenne is at the Terry Ranch Road overpass, just a few miles into Wyoming north of the Colorado border. This is near the very northern end of the Greeley Subdivision. Several dozen folks are gathered here at the overpass for a view of the northbound steam special.

After completing its 30 minute stop in Greeley, UP 4014 and train are now pulling north, continuing to Cheyenne. Due to the incredible number of people gathered, the train is moving along at walking speed. Indeed, two mechanics are walking ahead of the train on either side of the tracks, making sure everyone is in the clear. Once they are clear of the grade crossings in Greeley, the mechanics will board, and the train will pick up speed.

During the mechanical stop here in Greeley, one of the things the crew did was swap out the Colorado flag for a Wyoming flag on the front of the Big Boy. True, we are still in Colorado. But the next time the train comes to a stop will be in Cheyenne, WY.

UP's mechanical crew for the Big Boy are checking over the engine in Greeley, roughly halfway between Denver and Cheyenne. The gathered people are, for the most part, staying back from the locomotive during its stop.

Stopped across the 10th Street grade crossing alongside the Colorado Model Railroad Museum. As you can see, the largest operable steam locomotive in the United States always attracts quite a crowd! Hundreds of people showed up in Greeley to check out the 83-year-old engine.

After getting a shot of the Big Boy steam train at Sand Creek Junction, I skipped ahead all the way to just north of La Salle. The Big Boy always attracts quite a crowd and I did not want to get stuck in traffic on US-85! Here, the train is crossing over the South Platte River amidst some very nice fall colors on a pleasant Wednesday afternoon.

UP 6230 leads an ES44AC and an SD70ACe across the diamond at Sand Creek as it crosses over the diamonds namesake (Sand Creek). UP 6230 was delivered in May 1995 as SP 150. The train is also passing by the Suncor oil refineries. There are technically two refineries on the property, capable of processing close to 100,000 barrels of oil each day.
