The last shot of the Big Boy steam excursion for 2025 would come here, at the bridge over the South Platte River between La Salle and Greeley in northern Colorado. The lighting was beautiful and the smoke from UP 4014 was pumping out nicely as the train continued on its journey north back to Cheyenne.

UP 4014 crosses over Sand Creek at Sand Creek Junction, the train just coming off of the Inbound track to proceed north to Cheyenne. This is a very popular spot for shooting the steam train when it runs as, in the summer time, the three quarter lighting is about as perfect as it can get in the mornings.

In fantastic early morning light, UP 4014 and train pass through the Suncor oil refinery in Commerce City, the Denver skyline standing tall in the distance. Indeed, the train is drawing the attention of some Suncor employees. And the with the type of show UP puts on, who could blame them!?

UP 4014 is kicking up just a little bit of smoke as the train charges south on the main track just north of Platteville. The train is making track speed down the Greeley Sub, usually 50-60 MPH in most locations.

There is a very decent curve just north of Platteville where the tracks curve around from a southwest heading to a southern heading (for southbounds). UP 4014 and train are rounding that curve here, coming up on a clear (green) signal at the north end of Platteville.

On this particular excursion, UP auctioned off some cab rides to a handful of lucky patrons. There were four legs for (I believe) four passengers on each leg: Cheyenne to Greeley, Greeley to Denver, and on the return trip, Denver to Greeley, and Greeley to Cheyenne. Right here, the Cheyenne to Greeley riders have detrained, and the Greeley to Denver riders have boarded.

The UP steam team has changed out the Wyoming state flag with a Colorado state flag here at the station stop in Greeley. Another 10 minutes or so and the train should be ready to start steaming south toward Denver.

It is always amazing just how many people the Big Boy draws trackside. People from all over the state (and even country) have come to Greeley to check out the excursion. People were set up with camp chairs, some had ladders, while others were just on foot, happy to be there.

The Big Boy has come to a stop on the main right by the Colorado Model Railroad Museum, which contains a massive HO layout inside. Greeley police have 10th Street completely closed at the grade crossing to allow admirers of the Big Boy to stand and check out the massive machine.

During its 30 minute stop here in Greeley, the steam crew will do several things. They will check UP 4014's exterior, as well as add oil where necessary. They also swap out the Wyoming state flag with a Colorado state flag. This one of the classy things the steam team does on their excursions, changing out the state flags as they go.
